Output Differential Voltage Performance Demo

Hello, my name is Randy Pitts, and I'm the marketing manager for the Intersil interface product line.

Today I'm going to compare the output differential voltage performance of the recently released ISL32458E 3.3V, high speed, RS-485 transceiver with 60V fault protection against a leading competitor part. I will also highlight the supply tolerance differences between the two devices. The ISL32458E supply tolerance is 10% while the competitor is 5%.

Initially, the supply voltage is set to three volts, which is the lower end of a 10% tolerance, 3.3V supply. The data rate is set to 10 megabits per second, which is the maximum data rate of the competitor part. As you can see, the Intersil device is already functioning properly at 3V, while the competitor part has yet to power up. Now let's turn the supply up to 3.3V. The competitor part is now functioning.

Output Drive Capability

Now let's compare the output drive capability of each part. You can see that the ISL32458E is delivering a 1.3V differential signal to the 54-ohm load. The competitor part is only delivering a 0.9V signal to the load. The 40% higher drive capability of the Intersil part will enable the system designer to drive longer data lines, and have additional noise margin.

Performance Summary

Let's review the performance differences between the ISL32458E and the competitor part. As you can see, the Intersil device has a 40% higher output differential voltage, twice the power supply tolerance, 2X the data rate, and double the fault protection.
