Rad Hard Op Amps

Operational amplifiers are essential building blocks of any data acquisition system, and modern space applications demand their performance be as good as any commercial op amp but without degradation in the radiation environment. System designers of space or hi-rel applications often have to compromise signal integrity when it comes to selecting a radiation hardened op amp, since many key parameters such as input offset voltage, slew rate, and input bias current are not good enough over the needed total accumulated radiation.

Intersil’s new PR40 bipolar process uses bonded wafer SOI substrates and is used for several newly introduced operational amplifiers offer best-in-class DC and AC performance over radiation. This baseline process technology is also being utilized in the development of other circuits that are integral to the signal chain, i.e. voltage reference, temperature sensors, ADC drivers, etc. The overall goal is to give hi-rel space designers the tools necessary to develop a system whose performance specifications rival leading commercial counterparts without having to compromise performance in a radiation environment.
