There has been a lot of change at Intersil over the last several years, including management changes - why is that?
Intersil has been in the semiconductor industry for 50 years, you don’t last in a fast paced environment like this one without being capable of evolving.
The company appointed a new CEO in 2013, Necip Sayiner, who was brought in to focus the company’s R&D efforts on what we do best. The goal is to drive higher quality revenue growth that is more lasting and less volatile. Our CEO has a great track record of building strong businesses. He was most recently at Silicon Labs where he transformed the company from one that was dependent on one customer and one market to one of the most profitable and well respected mid-sized semiconductor companies. He doubled revenue during his seven year tenure, a growth rate well in excess of industry growth during that time period. Necip is applying that successful track record here at Intersil, taking advantage of the great technology we have and focusing the organization.
Necip and his team have made a number of changes to invest more heavily in the company’s core strengths. There are currently more design engineers focused on power than any time in the company’s recent history. Operations and other support organizations have also adopted best practices that have enabled even better support of the product development process. Many of these changes have already made a difference that you can see in Intersil’s financial results in terms of improved profitability. The more telling difference is in the improvement in the quality and timeliness of product innovation and the increase in opportunities and design wins as a result.
How does Intersil plan to gain market share and be a top grower in the power market?
There are two essential elements to a healthy company: growth and profitability. The semiconductor market is very competitive, and growth at all costs is not sustainable. At Intersil, we have made the strategic choices that will allow us to pursue growth areas where we have the capability to develop differentiated products. We believe that the portfolio we have today and the R&D that is underway, will enable us to deliver strong growth and gain share in our target markets.
We have a management team that believes the most important decision we make is what products to develop, so business cases are reviewed thoroughly at a corporate level before investments are made. Business cases are validated throughout the development process to ensure that new products will be competitive when they come to market.
Investments focus on those areas where we have the core IP, the talent, the market knowledge and the customer relationships to win. We are targeting a nearly $10B power management market. Intersil was a pioneer in power management and continues to have one of the best patent and trade secret portfolios in this area. We count the most competitive companies in the industry among our customers, Samsung, Cisco, Huawei, Lenovo, Apple, Microsoft, Google, Boeing and others.
Intersil has always had a great technical team and a strong reputation in the industry. We are building on that foundation and using a more targeted product filter to go after key markets and gain market share. Strong R&D execution, solid go to market strategies and the discipline to target markets where we can have sustained success is allowing us to see early success in terms of market share expansion.

It’s been a long time since I’ve worked for a company with a consistent bonus payout, I hear Intersil has a strong profit sharing program?
Intersil’s profit sharing plan is provided to every employee and is based on the company’s operating income results, which is a metric of profitability. Every quarter employees receive a scaled bonus depending on the company’s results.
A competitive bonus has paid out every quarter since our new CEO’s arrival in 2013. Payout will vary quarter to quarter, but since the management team and employees are all incentivized based on the company’s operating income results, there is a high level of focus across the workforce that drives alignment in decision making.
It seems like semi companies are always laying people off when the industry is bad, what is Intersil’s history?
Intersil underwent major resource adjustments and rebalancing to begin to live within our means when new management joined in 2013. The goal was to be disciplined about how we invested our resources to be sure we weren’t over extended and would be able to continue to invest in key projects and people even when the end markets were weak. The slowdown in the semiconductor market that began in the summer of 2015 put this to the test.
Intersil’s earlier discipline has allowed us to continue to invest in our R&D projects, continue to pay bonuses on strong profitability and avoid the disruption of frequent layoffs.
How is Intersil structured?
The company has three major business units:
Industrial and Infrastructure Power
The I&I group designs and markets analog and digital power products, including digital controller ICs and modules, for cloud computing infrastructure, communications infrastructure and a broad set of industrial applications.
The Mobile Power group develops battery and display power management technologies for mobile devices, including ultrabooks, tablets, smartphones and wearables. Leveraging the company’s heritage of technology leadership in the PC market, this team has every major consumer name brand among its customers.
The Precision team develops a mix of products targeted at high reliability and radiation hardened space applications where precision analog performance is required under the most rigorous conditions.
The Precision group is also at the heart of Intersil’s automotive strategy and has developed marketing leading technology for rear view cameras and a growing portfolio of power technology for in-cabin applications. The increasing number of hybrid and electric vehicles is also creating demand for the company’s mult-cell balancing technology.
This group also has responsibility for a broad line of analog products supporting the analog signal chain for a variety of industrial applications.
