Xicor Launches Fiber Optic IC Products
-- New family targets fiber optic modules for fiber channel and gigabit Ethernet applications~-- Products integrate major laser diode control functions
Milpitas, California, July 24, 2000 - (NASDAQ: XICO) Xicor today announced the X952x, a new family of programmable mixed signal products that will simplify fiber optic modules. These new products are designed to integrate several major control and monitoring functions for laser diode modules in fiber LAN and gigabit Ethernet applications. These include bias current control, modulation control and voltage level sensing. The devices are programmed using a standard two-wire Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC) interface protocol.
The flagship product, X9520, combines three nonvolatile digitally controlled potentiometers (DCPs), Vcc power-on- reset control, two programmable threshold voltage monitor inputs with software and hardware output indicators, and EEPROM with Block Lock protection. The other devices, the X9521, X9522 and X9523, provide combinations of functions that are subsets of the X9520.
"With the number of bits traveling through the world's communications networks doubling every hundred days, fiber optic technology offers the only hope for keeping up with the demand," said Paul Standish, director of mixed signal products. "Fiber optic module manufacturers already use millions of Xicor's DCPs to bias laser diodes. Our new X952x family integrates our proven DCP technology, industry-leading nonvolatile memory technology and basic control functions into a single chip to simplify fiber optic modules as well as reduce manufacturing costs."
Four Family Members (see summary chart below)
- The X9520 incorporates all of the functionality of the X952x family.
- The X9521 contains two digitally controlled potentiometers and 2Kb of
EEPROM but omits the voltage monitors and POR control - The X9522 contains three digitally controlled potentiometers and 2
programmable
