Xicor First-To-Market with 1024 Tap, Nonvolatile, Digitally Controlled Potentiometer
-- High-resolution potentiometers substantially enhance and simplify control capability in precision analog applications~-- Nonvolatile solid state replacement for mechanical potentiometers and D/A converters
MILPITAS, California, November 13, 2000 - Xicor, the industry leading supplier of digitally controlled potentiometers, announced today the X9110, X9118, X9111 and X9119 single, 1024 tap, nonvolatile digitally programmable potentiometers, a further enhancement of Xicor's programmable mixed signal product line. These devices offer the highest resolution (10 bits) available in the industry and are ideal replacements for high-precision, multi-turn, mechanical potentiometers in applications requiring highly accurate adjustments or calibration.
"Xicor continues to set the standard for precision solid state programmable resistance solutions. The X9110 family offers designers 1024 levels of gain control and offset correction required in control loops or calibration settings," said Tony Ochoa, marketing manager for the Mixed Signal Product Line. "These products eliminate the need for time consuming and expensive manual adjustments, and reduce overall system cost".
Building on Xicor's EEPROM technology to achieve nonvolatility, these devices recover their last setting after a power down cycle, which is valuable inmany applications requiring a programmable resistance with 10-bit accuracy, such as multi-carrier base stations and high precision industrial control functions and sensor interfaces.
Key advantages and applications in brief
- An XDCPtm's nonvolatility holds precision values: system settings can be saved on power down. In addition, the parts can be reprogrammed to different operating conditions while running and then remember those settings.
- An XDCP.s simple implementation of programmable settings does not require a processor when used in "set & forget" mode. An XDCP.s flexibility can be used in closed loop or open loop modes for automated system calibration in manufacturing systems.
- XDCP's offer .zero error. performance by .programming. out offset errors and gain errors to enable the use of generic components in precision applications. Target applications include: - Process control where retention of system parameters is vital to the safety of the system - Data acquisition systems for offset nulling and span setting - Signal conditioning in sensor interfaces such as temperature and pressure - RF power amplifier biasing - Bias settings of laser diodes in fiber optic modules
| Part Number | Rtotal | Interface | Single/Dual Supply | Packages |
| X9110 | 100K | IIC | Dual | TSSOP, XBGA |
| X9111 | 100K | IIC | Single | TSSOP, XBGA |
| X9118 | 100K | SPI | Dual | TSSOP, XBGA |
| X9119 | 100K | SPI | Single | TSSOP, XBGA |
The X9110 and X9118 are dual supply parts ideal for high precision audio or industrial applications operating from bipolar (+/-) signal levels. Both operate from supply voltages ranging from 2.7 to 5.5 V, and support the industry standard SPI (X9118) and 2-wire (X9110) serial interfaces.
The X9111 and X9119 are single supply parts that are ideal for unipolar (+ only) signal levels. Both operate from supply voltages that range from 2.7 to 5.5 V, and support industry standard SPI (X9119) and 2-wire (X9111) serial interfaces.
All four products will be made available in Xicor Ball Grid Array (XBGA) die size packaging as well as TSSOP. The total "end-to-end" resistance of the array in each part is 100k ohm. The resistance can be utilized as a two terminal load resistor with the wiper tied to one end of the resistance or as a 3 terminal voltage source when a reference voltage is desired. The four nonvolatile registers can be used as alternative wiper positions or as general-purpose storage registers. The nonvolatility of the wiper position is achieved by a detecting power up condition and retrieving the last wiper position value stored in the R0 register.
Availability, Price and Packaging
The X9110, X9118, X9111, X9119 are available in 14-pin TSSOP packages with a total end-to-end resistance of 100K ohm with pricing at the 1000 piece level of $2.97. The parts are sampling now and production quantities will be available in February 2001. The devices with Xicor Ball Grid Array (XBGA) die size packaging for volume constraint applications will be available in February 2001.
