Xicor Announces Fiber Optic Module Reference Design

--1 Gb/s design targeted at Fibre Channel and storage area network applications Complete design of VCSEL-based fiber optic module


MILPITAS, California – April 23, 2001 – Xicor, Inc. (Nasdaq/NMS: XICO) today announced the availability of a 1Gb/s fiber optic module reference design. This reference design is a complete fiber optic module system targeted at Fibre Channel and storage area network applications. The reference platform features:
  • Honeywell HFE4380-321 Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) diodes
  • Micrel SY88922 & SY88905 driver IC's to control PECL compatible data
  • Xicor X9258 quad 256 tap digitally controlled potentiometers for complete control of
    modulation current, bias current and monitor current
The reference design is available free at http://www.xicor.com.

The module reference design demonstrates solutions to some of the key design challenges facing fiber optic module designers today: temperature compensation, control of the "knee" or threshold effect, and accurate monitoring of average optical power output.
