Xicor Announces a New Family of INTEGRATED System Management ICs

--Targeted at mixed signal applications in many embedded processor systems

MILPITAS, California – July 23, 2001 – Xicor, Inc. (Nasdaq/NMS: XICO) today announced the availability of the first System Management ICs to integrate Xicor Digitally Controlled Potentiometers (XDCPs). The X40231, X40233, X40235, X40237 and X40239 INTEGRATED System Management ICs include Power-on-reset, Triple Voltage Monitors, 2 kbit EEPROM integrated with one or two XDCPs in a 16-pin package.

Integrating XDCPs with a CPU supervisor function adds new capabilities for embedded system designers without adding additional components. XDCPs can be used for applications such as:
  • Optimizing throughput for DDR SDRAM, RAMBUS, GTL BUS or other SSTL
(Series Stub Terminated Logic) Interfaces by adjusting VTT, Vref and VDDQ
  • Varactor/PIN Diode Control for RF Systems in Industrial PDAs
  • LCD control – adjusting contrast, purity or backlight, in portable products such as
    POS Terminals and LCD TV/Displays
  • Computerized Instrumentation – XDCPs used to measure/adjust sensors in Portable
    Test Equipment and Medical Instrumentation
  • Power Supply Margining in Telecom Systems
The INTEGRATION of the X4023x Family enables system designers to add more functionality in less space. A discrete IC implementation of the main blocks of the X40239 would require two potentiometers, a CPU Reset/triple voltage monitor and 2k EEPROM would take 32-36 pins and 1 sq inch. The X4023x is only 16 pins and takes .16 sq inches – the discrete solution is 600% bigger! Triple Voltage Monitors enhance reliable power-on, fault detection and recovery. Most processors or embedded processor ASICs have both an I/O voltage and a Core voltage. These processors may be in an undefined state when the supplies are not within the manufacturer-specified tolerance causing erroneous operation. Voltage Monitors are used to hold the processor in RESET when these faults occur. Most embedded systems also need memory to store a serial number, manufacturer data, configuration data and customer parameters.

"This is a new level of integration: mixed signal circuits, EEPROM memory, and a 2-wire serial interface," stated Mike Levis, vice president of marketing at Xicor. "It demonstrates our leadership in System Management integration, and provides real world solutions that our customers can use as a starting point in their next design."
