Xicor Announces 256K SPI EEPROM

-- Fast 5 Mhz operation at 2.5V~-- Ideal for high performance portable products

Milpitas, California, July 17, 2000 - Xicor, Inc. (NASDAQ: XICO) today introduced a new member of its EEPROM memory product line, the X25256, a 256K product that operates down to 2.5 V and supports the industry standard SPI interface operating at 5 Mhz. The X25256 is designed to meet the needs of portable products, and is ideal for use in cell phones, PDAs and other energy sensitive applications. When delivered in the tiny Xicor Ball Grid Array (XBGA™) packaging, the X25256 is ideally suited for applications with the most demanding size requirements. The XBGA package is 58% smaller than older SOIC packages (8.4 mm2 for XBGA versus 20 mm2 for SOIC packaging).

"The X25256 fills out Xicor's line of industry standard SPI EEPROM products, and is ideal for those medium performance applications requiring low cost, high density EEPROM solutions," said Michael Levis, vice president of marketing. "The ability to support operation in 2.5V systems makes this product the solution of choice for battery powered products."

With this release, the Xicor SPI EEPROM family includes densities from 2K to 256K. The X25256 features a pinout and functionality compatible with industry standard products available from a variety of suppliers. The X25256 includes support for Xicor's unique Block Lock™ function that allows a designer to "lock" selected memory blocks within the memory array via special software register commands, preventing unauthorized access to these blocks. This function adds an enhanced level of security to preventing cloning in cell phones or other applications where proprietary information needs to be securely stored.

Availability and Price
The X25256 is packaged in an 8 lead SOIC, 8 lead EIAJ, 20-lead TSSOP and an ultra small foot print XBGATM package. The price of the X25256-2.5 with a Vcc of 2.5V in an 8-lead SOIC package in the 1000 quantity level is $3.15.
