Xicor and Motorola Collaborate On "Smart Biasing" Solutions for RF Power Amplifiers
MILPITAS, California January 16, 2002 Xicor, Inc. (Nasdaq/NMS: XICO) announced today that they have teamed up with Motorola to provide radio frequency power amplifier (RFPA) reference platforms for GSM, EDGE and W-CDMA cellular basestation applications.
These reference platforms will incorporate Xicor's unique "Smart Biasing" ICs for RFPA applications. As part of this collaboration, Motorola will provide its industry leading RF LDMOS power transistors along with the company's advanced RF applications expertise. This effort will enable Motorola to enhance its existing GSM, EDGE and W-CDMA reference designs with the incorporation of Xicor's "Smart Bias" ICs.
With a clear leadership position in the wireless infrastructure market place, Motorola delivers a comprehensive set of RF power solutions for wireless infrastructure power amplifier equipment. Providing state-of-the-art solutions, Motorola's high power RF transistors and amplifier modules further 3G wireless deployment and are applicable to worldwide wireless standards targeting major global cellular systems, such as GSM EDGE, CDMA, and W-CDMA/UMTS.
Xicor's advanced smart biasing ICs dramatically reduce the cost of RFPA implementation. These products feature:
- Autobiasing and calibration, which reduces RFPA set up in manufacturing from 10-20 minutes to less than 5 seconds.
- Simple digital interface for controlling analog calibration, thereby reducing design time and effort.
- Fully integrated temperature compensation, increasing PA performance and eliminating the need for costly external temperature compensation.
- Integrated alarm functions for improved system reliability, providing advanced warning for power fail, over- or under-voltage, or gate shutdown events.
"We are very pleased to partner with a company with the breadth of experience in RF applications as Motorola," stated Mike Levis, vice president of marketing at Xicor. "Motorola's recognized leadership in RF LDMOS technology and RF application support, combined with Xicor's unique expertise in bias & control ICs, will provide wireless infrastructure customers with an "off the shelf" solution to significantly reduce the cost of basestation design and manufacturing."
"Our objective is to continue our leadership in RF power amplifier component solutions. The Xicor RFPA bias ICs provide an innovative solution for autobiasing and calibration and will significantly reduce the cost of RFPA design and manufacturing for our customers," said Lynelle McKay, director of operations at Motorola's Wireless Infrastructure Systems Division. "This collaboration and the offering of the 'Smart Bias' Reference Design provides a turnkey solution that meets the performance requirements of next generation cellular basestations."
