Pin-Compatible ISL8204M and ISL8206M Are the Latest Off-the-Shelf Options to Solve Tough Power Supply Challenges
MILPITAS, CA, Feb. 3, 2010 – Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ Global Select: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high-performance analog and mixed-signal semiconductors, today announced the ISL8204M and ISL8206M, the newest members of its family of compact power modules.
The ISL8204M and ISL8206M are complete switch-mode power supplies in a single compact surface-mount package. Included within the module is a PWM controller, power MOSFETs, power inductor and associated discrete components. These new products are footprint compatible with Intersil’s recently announced ISL8201M. This gives designers the flexibility to fix their point-of-load (POL) power requirements much later in the design cycle and optimize system power needs without having to re-layout the PCB. This family of new modules is ideal for computing, telecommunications and networking infrastructure, and industrial products.
Power Made Simple
Today, designers must create different power solutions depending on the output
current demands. The pin-compatible ISL8204M, ISL8206M and ISL8201M are 4A,
6A and 10A rated modules that give designers a choice to meet different output
current demands without the need to change the rest of the product. Constructing
a high-performance POL regulator with the ISL8204/06/01M is fast and simple. All
you need are input and output capacitors, and a single resistor to program
the output voltage.
As system power performance requirements increase, so do the design risks. The ISL8204/06/01M deliver high performance without the risk. And with fewer components, reliability in the field is improved as well.
Power system design often happens late in the product development cycle, which increases the possibility of product delays. The ISL8204/06/01 decrease the likelihood of last-minute design problems – simply drop the module on the board, and it works. Now it’s easy to get the power supply right the first time, and get your product to market on schedule.
Key Technical Specifications
The ISL8204/06/01M’s compact 15mm x 15mm x 3.5 mm package consumes very
little PCB area. With the thermally enhanced QFN package, heat is dissipated
through the bottom of the package, which frequently eliminates the need for
a bulky heat sink or cooling fan.
The ISL8204/06M operate at up to 95% efficiency with a wide input voltage range of 1V to 20V. A single resistor sets VOUT from 0.6V to 6V.with +/- 1 percent accuracy. All three modules also feature overcurrent protection, internal soft start with pre-biased output start-up and fast transient response.
Unlike some competing power modules, the ISL8204/06/01M are assembled in surface-mount QFN packages with leads around the perimeter. This provides more reliable soldering, solder-quality inspection and easy access with oscilloscope probes.
Pricing and Availability
The ISL8204 is available now in 15-lead QFN packages with prices starting
at $8.12 each in 1000-piece quantities. The ISL8206M is also available now
in a 15-lead QFN package, with prices starting at $11.34 each in 1,000-piece
quantities.
