New 4 And 8 Nanosecond Comparators From Elantec Complete High-Speed Family

Operating with 12V inputs, the EL5185C and EL5181C single comparators directly drive logic circuits

MILPITAS, CALIFORNIA, May 17, 2001 -- Elantec Semiconductor, Inc. (NASDAQ: ELNT), a leader in high-performance analog ICs, today introduced two new high-speed comparators. The EL5185C achieves a fast 4ns propagation delay from a 16mA supply current, while the EL5181C features a 8ns propagation delay on just an 11mA supply current. Because they use separate analog and digital supplies, these comparators can process input voltages up to 10V and produce a 3V or 5V logic-level output, thereby eliminating the need for external level shifting circuitry.

The EL5185C and the EL5181C are designed for operation with single supplies up to 12V or dual supplies up to ±5V. For single supplies, the inputs can operate from 0.1V below ground for use in precision ground-sensing applications. The output side of these comparators can be supplied from a single supply of 2.7V to 5V. The rail-to-rail output swing enables direct connection to both CMOS and TTL logic circuits, while the latch input can be used to hold the comparator output value by applying a low logic level to the pin.

Both devices are sold in an 8-pin SOIC package. Samples are available now, with pricing in 1,000-unit quantities at $2.19 each for the EL5185C, 4ns comparator, and $1.86 each, for the 8ns EL5181C.
