Intersil’s PRISM® II Featured in Z-Com’s New LANEscape™ Wireless Product Line
New Access Point, PC Cards, PCI and USB Adapters for the home and business
IRVINE, CA, November 3, 2000 — Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), the world’s leading provider of silicon technology for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), today announced that Z-Com, Inc., has integrated Intersil’s PRISM II WLAN chip set into a new suite of LANEscape wireless products including an Access Point and four different types of client devices.
"Z-Com’s new LANEscape product suite joins a growing list of PRISM-based wireless LAN products aimed at home and business users," said Larry Ciaccia, vice president and general manager of PRISM Wireless Products at Intersil. "PRISM II, a complete chip set solution for developing these IEEE 802.11b-complaint, 11 megabits-per-second (Mbps) wireless networking systems, enables customer partners such as Z-Com to quickly develop and deploy these innovative products in a multitude of platforms for a rapidly growing end market."
Z-Com’s new LANEscape XI-1000 Access Point is essentially a wireless hub that serves many clients and features an 11 Mbps data rate with plug-and-play operation that makes it user friendly and easy to install. The integrated dipole antenna provides coverage up to 800 feet in a free space. The XI-1000 provides enhanced security features such as Wired Ethernet Privacy (WEP) support and MAC address filtering.
Z-Com also offers four options for making client systems wireless. Two PC cards, the LANEscape XI-300 and XI-300B, fit into the standard PCMCIA slots found in all notebook computers. The XI-300 has a detachable diversity antenna, while the LANEscape XI-300B is a plug-and-play PC card with a built-in diversity antenna. Both PC Cards are Wi-Fi™ certified by the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance and provide fast wireless connections up to 11 Mbps — equivalent to wired Ethernet.
The LANEscape XI-600-XA PCI Interface adapter gives the PC user an economical method to add wireless capabilities to desktop computers with PCI slots. The XI-600 adapter board provides a rear-access PC Card socket solution for use with the XI-300 and XI-300B PC cards.
Z-Com’s LANEscape XI-700-XA USB Interface adapter addresses the growing popularity of PCs with USB ports. Designed for trouble-free, plug-and-play installation to a computer’s USB port, the XI-700 provides the PC user with a fast, easy way to configure computers with wireless capabilities. The XI-700 adapter is solely dedicated to the LANEscape XI-300 and XI-300B.
Adoption of PRISM WLAN Technology
Since introducing the PRISM WLAN chip set in 1996, over fifty companies have incorporated PRISM chips in more than 100 product designs. In a May 2000 report, the Cahners In-Stat Group called Intersil "the dominant force in the WLAN chip set marketplace with their PRISM chipsets holding the majority of market share. " PRISM technology is designed to comply with the IEEE’s 802.11b global standard, and Intersil is a founding sponsor of the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA), whose Wi-Fi™ brand is a mark of compatibility for 802.11b-based systems. PRISM chips are used in WLAN systems from industry-leading companies including Alcatel, Cisco, Compaq, 3Com, Dell, D-Link, Nokia, Nortel, Samsung, Siemens, SpectraLink, Symbol Technologies and Zoom.
