Intersil’s PRISM® II Chips Selected For Symbol Technologies’ High-Speed Wireless Networking Solution
Symbol’s Spectrum24 High Rate WLAN delivers Ethernet-Equivalent Wireless Connectivity
SAN JOSE, CA, Wireless Symposium, February 24, 2000 — Intersil Corporation, the world’s leading developer of silicon technology for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), today announced that its PRISM® WLAN Chip Set has been incorporated into Symbol Technologies’ Spectrum24™ High Rate Wireless LAN.
Spectrum24 High Rate WLAN delivers up to 11 megabit-per-second (Mbps) transmission of large graphics files and multimedia, allowing the mobile user to quickly transfer bandwidth-rich files wirelessly.
"Widespread deployment of wireless LANs is being driven by high data rates and standards-compliant solutions, and Symbol’s solution embraces both of these features," said Larry Ciaccia, vice president and general manager of PRISM Wireless Products at Intersil. "We are pleased that they have selected PRISM to advance their efforts."
The Spectrum24 High Rate WLAN consists of an Access Point, PC card and NIC card LAN adapters, mobile computing devices with integrated wireless LAN adapters and network management software and tools. The system seamlessly interfaces with existing wired environments via access points, creating a wireless bridge between laptops, desktop computers and other devices equipped with Spectrum24 High Rate client adapter. Intersil’s PRISM chips allow Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) radio transmission of data over the 2.4 GHz ISM band with compliance to the IEEE 802.11b high rate standard for high rate transmission of data, voice and video.
"Spectrum24 High Rate provides advanced high rate wireless LAN connectivity for today’s mobile workforce," said Rich Bravman, general manager and senior vice president of wireless systems at Symbol. "We recognize PRISM as the leading silicon solution for wireless networking and we’re confident that our collaboration with Intersil delivers a high performance system that seamlessly complements an office’s wired network."
