Intersil's PRISM Chip Set Powers New Shin Young Wireless LAN Products

IRVINE, CA, April 17, 2002 – Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), the world’s leading developer of silicon technology for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), announced today that its PRISM® WLAN chip set is incorporated into two new wireless (802.11b) products from Shin Young Telecom Co., Ltd.

Shin Young’s SWL-2000 Wi-Fi Access Point (AP) provides a wireless connection that builds infrastructure for the network or extends the reach of the network communications capability. It bridges a wireless LAN to a wired Ethernet network or it can extend the range of a wireless network by serving as a building-to-building bridge. The SWL-2000N PCMCIA WLAN Card is designed for notebook PCs and plugs into the notebook’s PCMCIA slot and allows users to take advantage of the notebook computer’s portability while providing wireless access to network resources. The PC Card is compatible with Windows 95, 98, 2000, NT 4.0, Millennium and Linux operating systems.

“Shin Young’s new Wi-Fi products provide affordable IEEE 802.11b-compliant, 11 megabits-per-second (Mbps) wireless networking solutions for the home and business,” said Dave Feller, director of Marketing for Intersil’s Wireless Networking Business. “PRISM chip sets enable customer partners such as Shin Young to quickly develop and deploy 802.11b products in a multitude of platforms for a rapidly growing end market.”

The SWL-2000 is a wireless hub capable of serving multiple clients and features an 11 (Mbps) data rate. The dual external/internal antennas provide an extensive range of operation of up to 300 feet indoors and 1000 feet outdoors at the 11 Mbps range. The SWL-2000 provides encryption security at up to 128 bits using Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) security. The Access Point also features easy-to-use Windows-based diagnostic tools and advanced authentication that provide a high level of security. It is equipped with a USB and 10/100 port for connection to an Ethernet network or broadband connection.

“Our new wireless Access Point and PC Card illustrates Shin Young’s commitment to provide easy to use and affordable wireless networking products for the home and office customers,” said Jake Ryu, general manager for International Marketing and Sales at Shin Young. “Utilizing the PRISM chip set allows us to develop wireless networking solutions that are more reliable, dependable and compatible with other WLAN hardware and software.”

The Global Wireless Market Embraces PRISM WLAN Technology
“Intersil is the number one manufacturer of wireless LAN chipsets and has been a driving force behind the success of WLANs,” said a May 2001 WLAN report from Cahners In-Stat Group. Since introducing the PRISM WLAN chip set in 1996, industry-leading companies including Accton, Actiontec, Alcatel, ASUSTeK, BroMax, Casio, Cisco, Compaq, 3Com, Dell, D-Link, GemTek, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Intel, Legend, Linksys, Nokia, Nortel, Panasonic, Quanta, Samsung, Sharp, Siemens, SOHOware, Sony, SpectraLink, Symbol, Z-Com and Zoom have incorporated PRISM chips in WLAN product designs. PRISM technology is designed to comply with the IEEE’s 802.11 global standard, and Intersil is a founding sponsor of the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA), whose Wi-Fi brand is a mark of compatibility for 802.11-based systems.
