Intersils PRISM® Chip Set Selected for Farallons New Wireless PC Card
SKYLine 11Mb WLAN adapter card wirelessly connects Mac PowerBooks and PC notebooks to Ethernet access points, including Apple’s AirPort
PALM BAY, FL, March 30, 2000 – Intersil Corporation, the world's leading provider of silicon technology for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), today announced that its PRISM® WLAN Chip Set has been incorporated into Farallon Communications, Inc.'s new high-performance SkyLINE 11Mb Wireless PC Card for portable computers.
PALM BAY, FL, March 30, 2000 Intersil Corporation, the world's leading provider of silicon technology for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), today announced that its PRISM® WLAN Chip Set has been incorporated into Farallon Communications, Inc.'s new high-performance SkyLINE 11Mb Wireless PC Card for portable computers.
The SkyLINE 11 megabit-per-second (Mbps) Wireless PC Card provides notebook computer users with high-speed, real-time access to network resources without the burden of wires. Users can search data, access e-mail and surf the Web wirelessly while still remaining connected to the network. The SkyLINE 11Mb PC Card is compatible with Macintosh PowerBooks and PC notebooks and also interoperates with Apple's AirPort wireless networking solution for convenient Internet access anywhere in the home, office or classroom. Due to ship next month, the product will be available through major distributors and resellers.
"Our collaboration with Farallon has resulted in the first PRISM-enabled WLAN product thats directly compatible with Macintosh PowerBooks and PC notebooks," said Larry Ciaccia, vice president and general manager of PRISM Wireless Products at Intersil. "Were pleased that Farallon selected PRISM because of their extensive distribution channels and because of Apples strong marketing support for products surrounding their AirPort wireless networking solution."
The SkyLINE 11Mb Wireless PC Card works with Macintosh PowerBooks and portable PCs equipped with a PCMCIA slot. With an 11Mbps data transmission speed, SkyLINE provides network access at speeds comparable to wired Ethernet via wireless access points or base stations. Additionally, it can create ad hoc peer-to-peer wireless networks without an access point between two or more SkyLINE-equipped notebook computers that communicate with each other. Intersils PRISM chips allow Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) radio transmission of data over the 2.4 GHz ISM band with compliance to the IEEE 802.11b high rate standard.
"The high data rate capability of Intersils PRISM technology has helped us add higher performance to our already successful wireless product line," said Ken Hasse, vice president of marketing for Farallon. "Were confident that Intersils strong silicon leadership coupled with Farallons cross-platform expertise and broad distribution channels will further drive the deployment of wireless networking systems in the home and office."
Adoption of PRISM WLAN Technology
Since introducing the PRISM WLAN chip set in 1996, over fifty companies have incorporated PRISM chips in more than 100 product designs. PRISM technology is designed to comply with the IEEEs 802.11 global standard and Intersil is a founding sponsor of the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA), whose "Wi-Fi" brand will ensure compatibility between various 802.11-based systems. Intersil has a continuing program to rapidly introduce better performing, more highly Integrated generations of PRISM chip sets and supporting design tools. PRISM chips are used in WLAN systems from industry-leading companies including Nokia, Siemens, Compaq, 3Com, Nortel, Samsung, Dell, Zoom, Cisco/Aironet, Symbol and SpectraLink.
