IRVINE, CA, June 26, 2000 Intersil (NASDAQ: ISIL), the worlds leading developer of silicon technology for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), announced today that AbsoluteValue Systems, Inc., is utilizing the PRISM® WLAN chip set in a new Systems Developers Kit that facilitates wireless networking system development for Linux-based operating platforms.
Being introduced as the first Linux solution of its kind, AbsoluteValues Developers Kit is a complete package of software, hardware, documentation and source code that allows developers to quickly implement a WLAN system. Its availability opens the door for standards-compliant, wireless network connectivity for users of the open-source GNU/Linux Operating System.
"Intersil is pleased to be a part of AbsoluteValues industry-first developers kit for the Linux Operating System," said Larry Ciaccia, vice president and general manager of PRISM Wireless Products at Intersil. "As Internet appliances begin to proliferate, Linux will be widely adopted as an ideal operating platform for mobile computing applications, a fact that makes this type of developers kit critical for the deployment of Linux-based wireless LAN solutions."
"Our AVS Wireless LAN Developers Kit marks another milestone in our ongoing relationship with Intersil," said Mark Matthews, co-owner of AbsoluteValue Software. "Were confident that our Linux-based WLAN system will capitalize on the tremendous market opportunity ahead for mobility-based, high-speed wireless local area network products."
Adoption of PRISM WLAN Technology
Since introducing the PRISM WLAN chip set in 1996, over fifty companies have incorporated PRISM chips in more than 100 product designs. In a May 2000 report, the Cahners In-Stat Group called Intersil "the dominant force in the WLAN chip set marketplace with their PRISM chipsets holding the majority of market share." PRISM technology is designed to comply with the IEEEs 802.11b global standard, and Intersil is a founding sponsor of the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA), whose Wi-Fi brand is a mark of compatibility for 802.11b-based systems. PRISM chips are used in WLAN systems from industry-leading companies including Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) Nokia (NYSE: NOK), Siemens (FRANKF: sie), Compaq (NYSE: CPQ), 3Com (NASDAQ: COMS), Dell (NASDAQ: DELL), Nortel (NYSE: NT), Samsung (KSC: 00830.KS), SpectraLink (NASDAQ: SLNK), Symbol (NYSE: SBL), and Zoom (NASDAQ: ZOOM).
