Intersil’s Power Management Controller Selected for Fujitsu Siemens Computers’ Next-Generation Desktop PCs

— Intersil’s Multiphase PWM Controller and MOSFET Driver Integrated Circuits (ICs) to power Fujitsu Siemens Computers’ new line of high-performance desktop computers

IRVINE, CA, August 29, 2000 — Intersil (NASDAQ: ISIL), a leading provider of power management solutions for PCs, file servers and portable information appliances, announced today that Fujitsu Siemens Computers has selected the Intersil multiphase power conversion chipset for Fujitsu Siemens’ next-generation high-performance desktop PCs. Fujitsu Siemens of Augsburg, Germany is a leading desktop, workstation, server, and notebook computer manufacturer. The PCs will be unveiled later this year.

Intersil’s modular multiphase converter circuit enables trouble-free scalability in computer power systems. As desktop PCs are upgraded with newer and faster Central Processing Units (CPUs), an upgrade to the system’s pulse width modulation (PWM) controller is often required to address the challenge of the increased power requirements. PWM is a high-frequency energy processing operation that is performed on the inverter-switched output voltage or current waveform to optimize performance.

About the HIP630X/HIP660X Family
The Intersil HIP630X/HIP660X multiphase product family consists of five multiphase PWM controllers and three MOSFET drivers, and uses a patented circuit topology that yields the highest performance multiphase dc/dc converter while requiring fewer and smaller passive devices. Intersil employs a unique current balance approach between the dc/dc converter phases that guarantees the industry’s most accurate phase-to-phase current balance for microprocessor power supplies.

The HIP6301, HIP6303, and HIP6311 are two–to–four phase PWM controllers that regulate output current above 100A (ampere), whereas the HIP6302 and HIP6304 are dedicated two-phase devices that control microprocessor loads in the 50A range. The HIP6601A and HIP6603A are single-channel MOSFET drivers, while the HIP6602A drives four n-channel MOSFETs in a multiphase buck dc/dc converter.

The HIP6301, HIP6303, and HIP6311 are offered in 20-pin narrow-body SOIC packages; the HIP6302 and HIP6304 are offered in 16-pin narrow-body SOIC packages; the HIP6601 and HIP6603 are offered in 8-pin narrow body SOIC, 8-pin TSSOP, and the new, thermally-enhanced 8-pin Exposed-Paddle (E-Pad) SOIC and sixteen-pin 4x4 Micro Lead Frame (MLF) packages; and the HIP6602 is offered in fourteen-pin narrow body SOIC and the new, thermally-enhanced sixteen-pin 5x5 Micro Lead Frame (MLF) package.
