Intersil’s Newest Endura™ PWM Controller Provides a Cost-Saving Solution for VoIP and VoDSL Markets

— ISL6401 controller generates talk and ring voltages for standard telephones

IRVINE, CA, September 6, 2001 – Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a leading provider of power management solutions for PCs, file servers and portable information appliances, announced today the ISL6401, the latest Endura™ Pulse Width Modulator (PWM) current mode controller specifically designed to generate talk and ring voltages for telephone service over cable and Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) systems.

IRVINE, CA, September 6, 2001 – Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a leading provider of power management solutions for PCs, file servers and portable information appliances, announced today the ISL6401, the latest Endura™ Pulse Width Modulator (PWM) current mode controller specifically designed to generate talk and ring voltages for telephone service over cable and Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) systems.

DSL gateways and other Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) appliances that provide Internet access and telephone service to a home or business must have an interface that provides a conventional telephone connection. Because the incoming digital service is not designed to provide power to conventional analog telephone equipment, the telephone interface circuit must do this by creating the proper voltages for on- and off-hook conditions and the ring signal. One ISL6401 controller can generate enough power for up to twelve Ringing Subscriber Line Interface Circuits (RSLICs) such as Intersil’s ISL5586.

"VoIP and VoDSL designers now have a talk and ring voltage supply solution that saves costs and board space by utilizing Intersil’s new highly-efficient Endura ISL6401 controller," said Rick Furtney, vice president and general manager of Intersil’s Analog Business Unit. "Voice-over-digital markets benefit greatly from our experience as a worldwide leader in power management and voice interface technologies. The ISL6401 is an example of that leadership as we have leveraged our technology and design expertise to provide another cost-saving solution."

Technical Information
The ISL6401 is an adjustable frequency, low power PWM current-mode controller used to generate voltages with more than 85 percent efficiency. DC-DC conversion efficiency is optimized using a low voltage to monitor current. In voice-over-digital applications, the ISL6401 is used to generate the required -24V (or -48V) for talk, and up to -120V for ring. A built in inverting amplifier allows direct feedback for regulation of the negative voltages used in ringing SLIC applications and saves parts count and cost.

A logic level input reduces supply current to 55uA in the shutdown mode. The PWM also features an adjustable operating frequency ranging from 50kHz to 600kHz, internal soft start, and a SYNC input allowing the ISL6401 oscillator to be locked to an external clock. The ISL6401 can also be used as a standard boost controller for positive voltages or as a regulator for either positive or negative voltages. Additionally, it satisfies a wide range of design problems including boost, flyback, forward and isolated output power supply configurations.

Pricing, Packaging and Availability
The ISL6401 is currently available in a 14-lead SOIC package. A 4 X 4 mm Micro Lead Frame Plastic (MLFP) package will be offered soon. The device is priced at $1.85 in 1,000 piece quantities. Boost controller and flyback evaluation boards for RSLIC power are also available.
