Intersil's New Triple Low-Dropout Regulator IC Saves Space and Reduces Costs in 802.11 Wireless LAN Devices
-- New multi-output regulator reduces BOM for Intersil's PRISM chip set reference designs
IRVINE, CA, November 21, 2002 Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog and wireless networking solutions, today announced full market release of the new ISL6411 triple low-dropout (LDO) regulator IC. The ISL6411 IC significantly reduces board space and bill of materials (BOM) by combining three LDO Regulators, a reset function and extensive circuit protection functions into a single chip.
This innovative single chip power solution makes it easy for designers of Wireless Local Area Networking (WLAN) systems to power many of todays small form factor industry standard cards such as PCMCIA, mini-PCI and Cardbus-32. It is also well suited for WLAN access points used in both business and residential settings.
The ISL6411 is a strategic development for Intersil because it replaces three regulators and numerous support components on our PRISM WLAN chip set reference designs, said Larry Ciaccia, vice president and general manager of Intersils Wireless Product Group. High integration and efficiency, ultra low noise and voltage sequencing in a single thin profile package makes the ISL6411 an ideal power solution for our PRISM chip sets. Naturally, this enables us to price our WLAN solutions more aggressively in a highly competitive market.
"We are excited about this new triple LDO, which is the first application-specific power management solution for the PRISM chip sets," said Rick Furtney, vice president and general manager of Intersils High Performance Analog Product Group. "We are confident that this solution will provide great performance and high value for Intersil's PRISM WLAN customers."
The ISL6411 is an ultra low noise triple output linear regulator with microprocessor reset and is optimized for powering wireless chip sets. The IC accepts an input voltage range of 2.5 V to 3.8 V and provides three regulated output voltages: 1.8 V (LDO1) for Baseband Processor/Media Access Controller (BBP/MAC), 2.84 V (LDO2) for analog functions, and another 2.84 V (LDO3) for voltage controlled oscillator (VCO). On chip logic provides sequencing for BBP/MAC and analog supply voltage outputs. LDO3 features ultra low noise that does not generally exceed 30 ìV RMS to aid VCO stability. High integration and the thin Quad Flat No-lead (QFN) package provide a small DC-DC converter size.
