Intersil's New Smaller Footprint Step-Up DC-DC Regulator Provides Higher Efficiency at High Frequency

MILPITAS, CA, May 11, 2004 Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog solutions, today announced a new single-chip boost DC-DC regulator with integrated power FET transistors. Intersils second-generation integrated FET DC-DC boost regulator, the EL7515, significantly improves efficiency while lowering the minimum input voltage and increasing continuous output power capability.
The EL7515 is targeted at TFT-LCD displays, digital cameras, and portable products such as test instruments and PDAs that are powered from a single Li-Ion or multiple NiMH battery cells, said Kaveh Parsi, Intersils director of marketing for Elantec Power Products. The EL7515 is the latest product offering in the family of integrated FET DC-DC regulators from the Elantec Product Group. These products take advantage of the latest CMOS technologies to offer excellent performance and price for todays demanding consumer and industrial applications.
The EL7515 generates an output voltage from 4.5 V to 17 V at 300 mA to 600 mA load current, while operating from a supply as low as 1.8 V. It is offered in a tiny 10-pin MSOP package and can be operated at switching frequencies as high as 1.2 MHz using very small inductors and external components. The tiny 0.25-square-inch total BOM footprint and very high efficiency make the EL7515 attractive for powering portable battery-operated devices. With an input range of 1.8 to 13.2 volts, the Intersils EL7515 can meet the minimum input voltage requirement for operation from two single Alkaline batteries and is also specified to operate over an ambient temperature range of -40 to +85 degrees C. The device is available in a compact MSOP10 package and requires minimal components to provide a complete DC-DC Step-Up (Boost) Converter.
When used to generate a +5 V output from a +3.3 V input, the EL7515 can provide from 100 mA to 500 mA of load current, while operating at up to 91% efficiency. With the device operating from a +5 V input and the output set for +12 V, the EL7515 can provide from 100 mA to 630 mA of load current at up to 92% efficiency. The desired output voltage is easily fixed to the desired value by two external resistors. Other features include a shut-down mode under which the device draws only 1 mA of supply current, an external enable control to turn the device on/off, and a low battery output signal (LBO) to warn when the input falls below a prescribed level.
