Intersil's New RS-485/RS-422 Family Offers Superior Performance with Longer Reach and Higher Data Integrity
MILPITAS, CA, June 3, 2003 Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog and wireless networking solutions, today announced the launch of the first three members of a new family of RS-485/RS-422 high-performance data transceivers that provide longer reach and higher data integrity than most competing products. Intersils new ISL8485, ISL8490 and ISL8491 high data rate RS-485/RS-422 transceivers offer up to 5 Mbps data rates with a peak-to-peak signal swing that beats most competing products. Typical applications for these new ICs include factory automation, security networks, KVM switching, industrial/process control networks (e.g., Fieldbus), building environmental control systems, HVAC control systems, level translators, and RS-232 extension cords.
The introduction of our first three RS-485/RS-422 ICs marks the expansion of our family into the differential data communications arena, said Mamoon Rashid, Director of Marketing for Intersils Analog Solutions Products. As leaders in the RS-232 markets, we have combined our design experience and manufacturing expertise to develop high-data-rate differential transceivers that offer a wider signal swing over longer distance to yield a higher data integrity than most competing products they replace.
The ISL8485, ISL8490 and ISL8491 are high-performance drop-in replacements for popular competing products of similar nomenclature. These new-generation transceivers offer designers an upgrade in performance and signal integrity, especially for long-run applications, and are guaranteed to operate over a +/-10% supply range - thats twice the range offered by most competing ICs. The ISL8485 is a half-duplex transceiver offering multiplexed receiver (Rx) inputs and driver (Tx) outputs to support Rx and Tx disable functions, all in an 8-lead package. The ISL8490 and ISL8491 operate full duplex with simultaneous transmit and receive. All three of Intersils new-generation high-performance RS-485/RS-422 transceivers boast of a mere 300 uA of quiescent current, a 7 V to +12 V common-mode input voltage range and Class 3 ESD protection (>7 kV HBM) on all pins. Both driver output current and thermal limiting protection features are built into each IC. Package options matching competing products include 8- and 14-lead SOIC and PDIP to accommodate drop-in compatibility.
