Intersil’s Latest Hot Plug™ IC Offering Delivers Dual PCI Power Control On A Single Chip

— Added Design Flexibility for Hot Swap Applications

PALM BAY, FL, November 29, 1999 — Intersil Corp. announced today the industry’s first integrated circuit (IC) providing independent power control to two Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) Hot Plug slots.

The HIP1011D delivers independent two-slot control in a single IC, simplifying design, reducing component cost and increasing system availability. The features and functionality of two HIP1011As are integrated into a single chip, resulting in reduced layout complexity and board space reduction. When coupled with as few as four discrete power MOSFETs and other passive components, it creates two highly integrated, yet complete and simple, power control solutions.

In addition to providing power on/off for the four voltages on the PCI bus, the HIP1011D ensures fault isolation, preventing a single defective load from dragging down the main system power. The ability to soft start load cards under live power conditions minimizes inrush current, keeping the system running during upgrades and servicing. Acting as an electronic circuit breaker for all four voltages, the HIP1011D provides over current detection and protection for both slots. It detects and reports under voltage on the +3.3, +5 and +12V outputs, helping eliminate system downtime.

The HIP1011D also features integrated +/- 12V control FETs, saving board space and associated mounting costs of MOSFETs and four extra sense resistors. The small outline package 28 lead NB SSOP saves board space with the same footprint as a single HIP1011 in a SO-16.
