Intersil's High Efficiency, High Accuracy White LED Driver Now in Volume Production
-- Intersil’s EL7513 ensures color accuracy and uniform brightness in portable color LCD backlighting
MILPITAS, CA, July 10, 2003 Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog and wireless networking solutions, today announced that its first offering for white LED displays, the Elantec® EL7513 LED driver, is now in volume production and shipping to customers. Intersils EL7513 is a high frequency pulse width modulation (PWM) step-up regulator capable of driving up to 12 light emitting diodes (LEDs), ensuring uniform brightness in white LED backlighting in small, color LCD displays for cell phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), digital cameras and other battery-powered electronics.
The EL7513 offers high efficiency, high input voltage capabilities, drives up to four LEDs in series and offers improved current accuracy over competing white LED offerings. These are critical factors in portable color LCDs, which explains why customer response to our initial white LED driver offering has been outstanding, said Michael Jennings, Intersils Elantec Product Group Director of Strategic Marketing for display products. White LEDs are rapidly becoming the choice for backlighting in small LCD applications, enabling thin, multi-color LCD displays for cell phones, smart phones, PDAs, digital cameras and the like. The EL7513 combines the many features needed for these applications, including the voltage output required to drive four LEDs in series or 12 LEDs in series/parallel, ensuring uniform brightness across white LED backlit screens.
EL7513 Technical Description
The EL7513 is a constant current boost regulator specifically designed for driving white LEDs. It can drive up to four LEDs in series or 12 LEDs in parallel/series configuration, while achieving up to 91% efficiency. Intersils EL7513 features soft-start and dimming control. Brightness of the LEDs is adjusted through a voltage level on the devices control pin. When the level falls below 0.1V, the EL7513 enters shutdown mode and consumes less than 1 microamp of current for input voltage less than 5.5V.
Intersils EL7513 is the first in a series of Elantec products targeted at white LED applications including PDAs, cellular phones, digital cameras, camcorders and portable games. Intersil will be introducing several new white LED products in the coming months while offering complementary Elantec video products such as gamma buffers, VCOM amplifiers, DC/DC converters and programmable buffers.
