Intersil's Endura Powers Intel's Xeon Processors for New-Generation Workstations and Servers

-- Endura power products development synchronized with Intel's VRM 9.1 roadmap ~
-- Top manufacturers adopted Intersil's power solutions for new 2 GHz Xeon workstations and servers

IRVINE, CA, October 12, 2001 – Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a leading provider of power management solutions for PCs, file servers and portable information appliances, today announced that Intersil's EnduraTM multiphase Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) controllers and drivers power Intel's new 2 GHz XeonTM processors for servers and workstations. Intersil's power solutions meet or exceed the Intel® Xeon processor and Voltage Regulator Module (VRM) 9.1 power specifications for multiprocessor servers and workstations.

Intersil's Endura controller development roadmap is synchronized with Intel's processor development plans to provide the highest-performing and most cost-effective multiphase DC/DC converter solutions powering Intel's processors for tomorrow's information systems.

"The world's top computer manufacturers have selected Intersil's Endura HIP6300 and HIP6600A-series power management chipsets to power new-generation Xeon processors for workstations and servers," said Rick Furtney, vice president and general manager of Intersil's Analog Business Unit. "Our reference designs provide the highest performance, highest efficiency and lowest cost CPU core power supply on the new 2 GHz Intel Xeon dual-processor motherboards."

Intersil's Multiphase Controllers and Drivers
Intersil's Endura HIP6300 series multiphase devices feature a high level of integration and proprietary architecture offering several system-design advantages. Intersil's innovative rDS(ON) sensing topology and phase staggering, coupled with other architectural features, enhances the converter's efficiency, improves transient response, reduces ripple and reduces overall bill-of-materials cost by eliminating the need for external current sense resistors.

"The industry's most precise channel-to-channel current balance further reduces cost by eliminating the need for over-designing each converter channel," commented Furtney.

Sophisticated features, such as the controller's ability to automatically reconfigure clock frequency based on the number of populated phases sensed, offers designers the flexibility of designing for a three- or four-phase DC/DC converter for Pentium 4 or Xeon processors using the same controller IC.

Other suppliers cannot match the phase current balance and efficiency offered by Intersil's HIP6300 series four-phase controllers and HIP6600 series MOSFET drivers in a Pentium 4 or Xeon core supply. Intersil's four-phase solutions operate at over 80 percent efficiency and at load currents up to 160A.

Endura devices allow for easy duplication of designs and layouts from one motherboard model to another, dramatically reducing time to market.

Other Intersil power products in the Endura HIP6500 series have been designed to provide power control for all other motherboard power management needs whether for PCs, servers or workstations. This includes power for the Intel 860, 850 and 845 chipsets, memory, I/O, and peripheral power.
