Intersil's Advanced CPU Core Regulator Powers Intel's Latest 3-GHz Mobile Pentium 4 Processor for Transportable Notebook PCs

-- Endura ICs provide advanced mobile power management that supports Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology, Deep Sleep and Deeper Sleep CPU modes for the newest generation of Intel mobile processors

MILPITAS, CA, June 19, 2003 – Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog and wireless networking solutions, today announced the ISL6247, a multiphase synchronous buck PWM controller with 6-bit VID input optimized for Mobile Intel® Pentium® 4 processors on 852PM and GME chip-set platforms. These advanced CPUs and chip sets, combined with this new Intersil Endura™ power management solution bring high performance and extended battery life to new transportable notebook PCs running at speeds up to 3.06 GHz. The ISL6247 two- to four-phase controller combined with the ISL6207 MOSFET driver ICs provide a CPU power solution that offers the industry’s highest performance-to-price ratio and supports Enhanced Intel® SpeedStep® technology, Deep Sleep and Deeper Sleep modes.

“Intersil’s new Endura ISL6247 PWM controller and ISL6207 MOSFET driver ICs provide an advanced CPU power solution that has already earned wide market acceptance,” said Rick Furtney, vice president and general manager of Intersil’s High Performance Analog Product Group. “What we offer to our customers with this solution is design flexibility, simplicity, highest accuracy, smallest size, lowest BOM and the industry’s highest performance to price ratio. To the mobile PC end-user, this translates into lower cost, higher reliability, longer battery life and optimal performance.”

The ISL6247 utilizes smart voltage regulation technology to support the Mobile Intel Pentium 4 processor’s Active, Deep Sleep, and Deeper Sleep modes. This new PWM IC includes a 6-bit digital-to-analog converter that enables dynamic adjustment of the core voltage. The ISL6247 includes a thermal monitor, which sends a signal to the microprocessor to reduce the load before power system components exceed their maximum thermal limits. ISL6207 MOSFET drivers are used to complete the power solution. These high-voltage MOSFET drivers are optimized to drive both upper and lower N-Channel power MOSFETS at each phase in this synchronous-rectified buck converter topology.

The ISL6247 supports loss-less DCR, precision resistive, or low-cost loss-less Rds(on) current sensing methods. It also provides a selectable channel switching frequency ranging from 200 kHz to 1 MHz. This provides flexibility in managing the balance between high-speed response, target efficiency, and good thermal management. An integrated thermal sensor adds valuable protection and further reduces the overall power solution cost. Solution voltage accuracy is the industry’s best at +/-0.6% guaranteed over temperature. In the near-chip-scale 40-pad 6 X 6 mm Quad Flat No-lead (QFN) package, the ISL6247 is the smallest in the industry for this market and application. Its size, thermal efficiency and power efficiency make it ideal for any popular form factor.
