Intersil’s 1200-Volt Industrial IGBT Family Delivers High Power Electrical Switching in Power Control Circuits

— Improves switching speed, energy losses, on-state voltage drop and short-circuit withstand time

PALM BAY, FL, October 8, 1999 — Intersil Corporation today introduced its portfolio of advanced industrial IGBTs. Combining the high input impedance of MOSFETs with the low on-state conduction loss of bipolar transistors, the company’s 1200V IGBT family features a range of Non Punch Through (NPT) B and C speed devices suited for motor control applications and ideal for use in modules.

Functioning as high power electrical switching devices in power control circuits, Intersil’s IGBTs have been engineered to offer dramatic improvements in switching speed, energy loss and short-circuit withstand time. Offering smaller, more reliable designs and a variety of currents, the IGBT family presents a unique array of design alternatives. The 1200V IGBT portfolio is ideal for high voltage switching applications operating at moderate frequencies where low conduction losses are crucial, including AC and DC motor controls, power supplies and drivers for solenoids, relays and contractors.

"Intersil is dedicated to providing engineers with quality design alternatives, and the company accomplishes this with the entire 1200V IGBT family," said V.P. Pai product manager at Intersil. "The devices are viable options over mature Bipolar transistors and expensive, and often rare, high voltage MOSFETs. Intersil’s NPT manufacturing process addresses delivery concerns by simplifying the process and realizing far greater yield."

The 1200V IGBTs feature low on-state voltage drops in both C speed at 2.1V, and B speed at 2.5V, allowing for smaller heatsink requirements. Tailored for motor control and power conversion, C and B speed selections result in greater choice for the designer as well as lower overall system cost. Short circuit withstand time has been rated 8uS at 15 gate to emitter voltage (Vge), reducing circuit failure, and a robust avalanche rating helps simplify circuit design.

Intersil’s IGBTs can be employed in a variety of applications. B speed IGBTs are optimized for industrial power conversion performance in uninterruptable power supplies (UPS) and switch mode power supplies, especially push-pull and step-up/step-down topologies and welding equipment. C speed industrial motor drive IGBTs are optimized for inverters and control applications. The 1200V devices are also used for induction heating in consumer cookers.
