Intersil Wins Multi-Format Laser Diode Driver Design with Pioneer Corporation
--Elantec ® laser diode driver IC enables high-speed recording in Pioneer’s new multiple format CD/DVD writer
MILPITAS, CA, July 22, 2003 Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog and wireless networking solutions, announced today that its Elantec EL6298 laser diode driver (LDD) has been selected by Pioneer Corporation, the worlds leading supplier of recordable DVD drives, for use in its new multiple format CD/DVD writer. Intersils EL6298 integrated circuit (IC) will provide the three current channels needed to read, erase, and write information onto CDs or DVDs in Pioneers sixth generation recordable drive, the DVR-A06.
"Intersils responsiveness and expertise in laser driver technology enabled Pioneer to quickly bring an innovative, CD/DVD driver to market that supports a wide variety of disc formats, said Ryuichiro Yoshimura, General Manager of Business Planning at Pioneer's Components Business Company. "Through our combined efforts, we were able to develop a disc drive for consumers that supports both popular formats - DVD-R/RW and +R/RW - in addition to legacy CD-R/RW formats. With our new DVR-A06, customers can now choose one drive that allows them to make their own DVDs and CDs without worrying about disc or format compatibility. This kind of customer focus has helped establish Pioneer as the worlds leading supplier of recordable DVD drives and helped Intersil achieve its position as the leading supplier of laser diode drivers.
Were delighted that Pioneer, a leader in DVD recordable drives and a trusted name in consumer electronics, has chosen our EL6298 for use in its new multiple format disc CD/DVD writer, said Simon Prutton, Intersils Director of Marketing for the Elantec Product Group. We look forward to contributing to the successful launch of Pioneers DVR-A06 and to building an even stronger Intersil-Pioneer relationship. We continue to add new products to Intersils Elantec optical storage portfolio, enabling even more powerful disc drive designs that satisfy a growing consumer demand for high-speed, hassle-free CD and DVD recording.
Intersils EL6298 laser driver IC precisely controls the analog voltage applied to the laser diode in Pioneers DVR-A06, enabling the laser to accurately read, erase or write information onto a CD or DVD. The EL6298 is a highly integrated programmable LDD with built-in waveform generator designed to support different media, DVD or CD standards, and different read/write speeds. As the worlds number one supplier of laser drivers to the optical storage industry, Intersil continues to play a critical role in the race to higher speeds.
