Intersil Upgrades ISL6558 PWM Multiphase Controller to Industrial Temperature Range and Near Chip-Scale QFN Packaging
MILPITAS, CA, March 20, 2003 Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog and wireless networking solutions, today announced the upgraded Endura ISL6558 precision multiphase PWM controller IC now featuring industrial temperature range and near chip-scale Quad Flat No-lead (QFN) package options. The ISL6558 is a precision controller suitable for powering microprocessors, chip sets, graphics, memory, computer peripherals and other low-output-voltage DC-DC converter applications.
The upgrading of this product now makes it available in both commercial and industrial temperature ranges and in both the 16-lead SOIC and 20-pad QFN packages. The ISL6558 QFN packaging yields 55% smaller area. The extended temperature range and low thermal impedance QFN package make the ISL6558 an ideal choice for industrial environments.
The ISL6558 is a multi-phase PWM controller that, in combination with the HIP6601B, HIP6602B, HIP6603B, or ISL6605 companion gate drivers, provides a complete solution for high-current, high slew-rate applications. The ISL6558 regulates output voltage, balances load currents and provides protective functions for two to four synchronous rectified buck converter channels. Intersils multiphase buck converter architecture uses interleaved timing to multiply channel ripple frequency, improve thermal performance, and reduce input and output ripple currents. Lower ripple results in fewer and cooler components, lower cost, reduced power dissipation, smaller PCB area, and improved reliability.
Lower MOSFET RDS(on) current sensing is used to measure current in each phase. This approach reduces parts count and cost along with the power dissipation associated with a current sense resistor.
Optional output voltage droop or active voltage positioning is supported via the ICs DROOP pin. Taking advantage of this feature reduces the size and cost of the output capacitors required to support a load transient.
