Intersil Unveils New Wideband Programmable Modulator for Digital Modulation in Wireless Systems

— New CommLinkTM Product Offers High Performance and Flexibility to Support Multiple Modulation Schemes

PALM BAY, FL, March 17, 2000 – Designers of wideband digital modulation systems looking for higher levels of integration can now incorporate a single signal processing solution into their design for the shaping, upconversion and modulation of quadrature (I/Q) data.

PALM BAY, FL, March 17, 2000 – Designers of wideband digital modulation systems looking for higher levels of integration can now incorporate a single signal processing solution into their design for the shaping, upconversion and modulation of quadrature (I/Q) data.

The HSP50415 Wideband Programmable Modulator (WPM), the newest member of Intersil’s CommLink™ family of signal processing and high-speed converter solutions, supports wideband applications such as pico-cell basestations, WLL, LMDS, MMDS, point-to-point microwave systems, smart antennas, VSAT and other "last mile" wireless Internet applications. It combines shaping and interpolation filters, a complex modulator, timing and carrier numerically controlled oscillators (NCOs) plus a 12-bit dual-channel digital-to-analog converter (DAC) in a single 100-lead MQFP package.

The programmability of the HSP50415 offers designers the flexibility to support a wide range of modulation schemes with a single design. The new device features digital operation up to 20 Mega Symbols/second based on QPSK modulation. The programmable architecture is capable of supporting various modulation schemes up to 16-bit vector modulation.

The complex baseband data is demultiplexed into separate I and Q components and can optionally take advantage of a user-programmable constellation map. The constellation map supports any modulation standard up to 256 QAM. The data is then shaped with an interpolation filter (24-symbol span) and modulated with programmable sine and cosine carriers from an on-chip carrier NCO. A NCO driven interpolation filter also allows the input and output sample rates to have a non-integer relationship. The benefit of this feature simplifies the use of output sample rates that do not have harmonic relationships to the input data rate and decouples the carrier from the data clock.

The HSP50415 maintains quadrature outputs and converts the I and Q data into analog signals with an integrated 12-bit dual-channel DAC capable of output sample rates up to 100 mega samples per second (MSPS). Prior to digital-to-analog conversion, the device features an optional DAC (sin x)/x rolloff compensation filter plus gain and offset adjustments for I and Q imbalance. If desired, the dual-channel D/A converter can be bypassed to output 14-bit digital I/F data.

The HSP50415 is capable of digital output spectral purity that exceeds 50dB at the maximum output sample rate. In addition, the device operates from a 3.3V supply to minimize power consumption and the inputs and outputs are CMOS compatible. A parallel bus is available to interface to a host processor.

Price and Availability
Now in production, the HSP50415 is available in a 100-lead MQFP package and is priced at $29.95 in quantities of 1,000 units. To reduce system-level evaluation time, a user-friendly evaluation board (HSP50415EVAL1) is available. The evaluation software features a graphical user interface that allows full user control over the HSP50415 evaluation board.
