Intersil Unleashes New Telecom Power IC Packed with Advanced Protection Features for Worry-Free Designs
-- New single-ended current-mode controller offers more features, more protection, greater precision, higher integration and lower overall power solution cost
MILPITAS, CA, August 26, 2003 Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog solutions, today announced the ISL6721 single-ended current-mode PWM controller. The ISL6721 is designed to regulate power in telecom, datacom, and Power over Ethernet (802.3af) systems. It also has numerous applications in industrial power supplies.
The feature-packed ISL6721 make it easy for power supply manufacturers to offer both compact and highly customizable power solutions to accommodate the special needs of their end customers, said Randy Roberts, Director of Intersils Broadband Power Product Line. The ISL6721 provides advanced fault protection features that allow OEM system builders to confidently integrate an ISL6721-based power supply directly into a system board knowing that abnormal operating conditions will not cause the power supply to fail.
The ISL6271 is ideal for both 48-V datacom and 36- to 72-V telecom applications. It is designed for a wide range of DC-DC conversion topologies including flyback, forward, and boost configurations. Peak current-mode control effectively handles power transients and provides inherent over-current protection. Other features include a low-power mode wherein the supply current drops to less than 200 uA during over-voltage and over-current shutdown faults. The advanced BiCMOS design features low operating current, adjustable operating frequency up to 1 MHz, adjustable soft-start, and a bi-directional SYNC signal that allows the oscillator to be locked to an external clock or other controller ICs for noise sensitive applications. Compared to related PWM controllers, the ISL6721 offers higher performance, higher integration and lower overall power solution cost.
