Intersil Supplies Power to Mass Storage Architectures
Intersil featured in Artesyn RAID power supply solution
Improves availability and reliability in RAID subsystems
IRVINE, CA July 27, 2000 Intersil (NASDAQ: ISIL), a leading developer of power solution devices for desktop PCs, file servers and workstations, today announced that the company’s power management technology will be featured in Redundant Array of Independent Disc (RAID) solutions. Acting as the power supply for these mass storage appliances, Intersil switch mode power supply (SMPS) products help to ensure the 24x7 availability and reliability of critical information. Intersil’s device has been incorporated into the Artesyn Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATSN) universal off-line power supply, a standard product found in RAID servers.
IRVINE, CA July 27, 2000 Intersil (NASDAQ: ISIL), a leading developer of power solution devices for desktop PCs, file servers and workstations, today announced that the companys power management technology will be featured in Redundant Array of Independent Disc (RAID) solutions. Acting as the power supply for these mass storage appliances, Intersil switch mode power supply (SMPS) products help to ensure the 24x7 availability and reliability of critical information. Intersils device has been incorporated into the Artesyn Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATSN) universal off-line power supply, a standard product found in RAID servers.
RAID architectures are deployed in storage area network systems (SANs) and SCSI based disc array systems. These mass storage deployments often house critical business data and the files required to implement Internet sites. Data availability and reliability are critical to the success of RAID architectures. Featured in Artesyns power supply solution, Intersil devices power the RAID server and lower the number of required components, eliminating the possibility of failure among the removed parts.
"Intersil is pleased to have been incorporated into Artesyns RAID power supply solution and to be entering the mass storage segment of the communications market," said Paul Leonard vice president of Industrial and Automotive power products at Intersil. "Intersils SMPS IGBTs positively impact the reliability and availability of the storage subsystems by reducing the number of components required to supply power to the RAID server. This type of innovation allows the most basic component of the information age, stored data, to be readily accessed by portable and stationary communications appliances in the home and office."
A single Intersil SMPS insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) device does the work of three metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs) in RAID server applications. This translates into lower component cost, a reduction in silicon and related costs and the elimination of the external drivers required by the MOSFETs. The reduction in devices positively impacts the servers mean time between failure (MTBF).
Artesyn has recognized Intersils SMPS IGBTs as superior alternatives to power MOSFETs for Power Factor Correction (PFC) applications. Intersils SMPS IGBTs are a critical component of Artesyns standard CVR375, high-current AC/DC off-line power supply for RAID architectures.
"Artesyn continues to focus its development efforts on the fastest growing sectors of the communications industry, including mass storage," said Joseph ODonnell, chairman and CEO of Artesyn Technologies. "Intersil plays an important role in Artesyns ability to deliver cost effective, power supply solutions that meet industry and regulatory specifications."
