BEIJING, CHINA and IRVINE, CA, August 27, 2001 — Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), the world’s leading developer of silicon technology for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), today announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding with China’s largest IT corporation, Legend Holdings Limited (HKSE stock code: 992; ADR stock quote: LGHLY), for joint research and development of WLAN products enabled with Intersil’s PRISM® WLAN technology.

Legend is the largest PC manufacturer in China and the Legend brand personal computers accounted for over 39 percent of China’s consumer PC market and more than a 10 percent market share in the Asia Pacific region (excluding Japan) during 2000. Legend is also a major provider of information services, along with the manufacturing and sale of handheld access devices, motherboards and printed circuit boards.

"This strategic agreement represents an extraordinary opportunity for Intersil and Legend," said Larry Ciaccia, vice president and general manager for Intersil’s Wireless Networking Business. "The combination of Intersil, the world’s number one manufacturer of wireless chipsets, reference designs and software for WLANs, and Legend, China’s leading manufacturer of PCs, is a colossal springboard for Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11) wireless networking in the Asia Pacific area."

"Legend selected Intersil as its strategic wireless solution supplier because of its very advanced, high quality and reliable wireless technology," said He Zhiqiang, vice president of Legend. "There will be an increasing demand for wireless LAN solutions in China and this cooperative agreement will enable us to introduce advanced wireless LAN technology into China."

The PRISM 2.5 solution features the world’s first single-chip Baseband Processor (BBP) and Medium Access Controller (MAC) that integrates digital functions normally done by two ICs. The integrated BBP/MAC includes a PCMCIA and USB interface that will allow Legend to easily add a USB or Mini-PCI interface into next-generation Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11b) wireless networking products for the home and office. The USB and Mini-PCI interfaces will position Legend to enter the embedded WLAN market for notebooks, PDAs, and other handheld platforms.

The Global Wireless Market Embraces PRISM WLAN Technology
"Intersil is the number one manufacturer of wireless LAN chipsets and has been a driving force behind the success of WLANs," said a May 2001 WLAN report from Cahners In-Stat Group. Since introducing the PRISM WLAN chip set in 1996, over 50 of the industry-leading companies including Actiontec, Alcatel, Cisco, Compaq, 3Com, Dell, D-Link, IBM, Legend, Linksys, Nokia, Nortel, Panasonic, Samsung, Scientific-Atlanta, Sharp, Siemens, SOHOware, Sony, SpectraLink, Symbol and Zoom have incorporated PRISM chips in more than 100 product designs. PRISM technology is designed to comply with the IEEE’s 802.11 global standard, and Intersil is a founding sponsor of the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA), whose Wi-Fi brand is a mark of compatibility for 802.11-based systems.
