Intersil Ships Two-Millionth PRISM® II Chip Set
Reaches two millionth milestone only 60 days after the one millionth mark
Demand building with strong growth in enterprise space
IRVINE, CA, September 22, 2000 — Intersil (NASDAQ: ISIL), the world’s leading provider of silicon technology for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), announced today it has shipped its two-millionth PRISM® II WLAN chip set since the first production shipments of the high performance silicon solution last October.
PRISM II is a complete chip set solution for developing IEEE 802.11b-compliant, 11 megabit-per-second (Mbps) wireless networking systems. The two-millionth PRISM II sales milestone validates Intersil’s leadership position as the leading supplier of silicon technology for wireless networking and also indicates tremendous progress in the wireless network technology adoption curve.
"This sales achievement is a clear indication that our investment in wireless networking is paying off, " said Larry Ciaccia, vice president and general manager of PRISM Wireless Products at Intersil. "As computer users continue to rely more on network resources such as e-mail and the Internet in their careers and daily lives, we’re confident that wireless will emerge as the clear choice for mobile network computing. We’re committed to the vision of ‘Internet Anywhere’ and we support the creation of wireless networks everywhere we live and work, including the office, the home, and places with public access such as hotels and airports. "
In the first month of production (October 6 — November 6, 1999), Intersil produced and shipped about 20,000 chip sets. Production rose rapidly thereafter and Intersil celebrated its one-millionth PRISM II shipment on July 21, 2000. This two-millionth PRISM milestone was achieved only 60 days later. "We are planning to ship over one million PRISM II chip sets for the October 6 — November 6 period, a 50X improvement over the 20,000 we shipped in the same time last year, " Ciaccia added.
The company cites several factors driving increased sales of WLAN systems: lower prices driven by high-performance, low-cost chip set technology; a global standard (IEEE802.11) for delivering wired Ethernet-equivalent data rates in the home or office; and the entry of computer, networking and telecommunications industry giants into the market. Intersil also expects that wireless networking capability will be widely adopted into next-generation, handheld information appliances for homes and offices which will deliver mobile Internet access; these devices will include "Web Pads, " Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and ultra-light mobile PCs.
Intersil’s mission is to continue developing the most advanced, highest performance, lowest power and most tightly integrated circuits that are optimized for high-data-rate wireless applications. Intersil is further committed to developing hardware, firmware, software and design tools that allow our customers to get technically-advanced, full-featured and globally-viable systems to market in the shortest amount of time. Its latest offering, PRISM 2.5, consists of only four ICs — three RF/IF ICs and one in the digital portion — and delivers 10BaseT Ethernet-equivalent data rates of 11Mbps. To further drive the market, Intersil plans to continually introduce new generations of PRISM chip sets in the 2.4 GHz band, as well as developing next-generation 5 GHz, 54 megabits-per-second solutions expected to be available in early 2001.
Adoption of PRISM WLAN Technology
Since introducing the PRISM WLAN chip set in 1996, 50-plus companies have used PRISM chips in more than 100 products. In a May 2000 report, the Cahners In-Stat Group called Intersil "the dominant force in the WLAN chip set marketplace with their PRISM chipsets holding the majority of market share." PRISM technology is designed to comply with the IEEE’s 802.11 standard, and Intersil is a founding sponsor of the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA), whose Wi-Fi™ brand is a mark of compatibility for 802.11b-based systems. PRISM chips are used in WLAN systems from leading companies including Alcatel, Cisco, Compaq, 3Com, Dell, Nokia, Nortel, Samsung, Siemens, SpectraLink, Symbol and Zoom.
