Intersil Ships Over 1.2 Billion Power ICs Leads Industry in PWM IC Shipments
-- Intersil will hold briefings at IDF and APEC 2004 in February
MILPITAS, CA, January 29, 2004 Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog solutions, today announced that it has shipped more than 1.2 billion power ICs over the past five years, serving the worlds power needs from PCs to digital cameras. Intersil is the world leader in PWM ICs, shipping more PWM controllers for the worlds power needs than any other company. Shipments of power ICs for 2003 alone exceeded 400 million units.
In their December 2003 market research report, The Global Market for Power Supply and Power Management Integrated Circuit, Fourth Edition, Venture Development Corporation (VDC) ranks Intersil as #1 in the shipment of PWM/PFM regulator ICs with a 15% market share.
Intersil continues to focus on the high performance power management opportunities that result from our core power expertise and advanced architectures, said Rick Furtney, Vice President and General Manager of Intersils High Performance Analog Product Group. We are leveraging our CPU core power leadership position to branch successfully into emerging markets with similar power needs.
Intersil has gained its status and world recognition as the power systems architect over the years by supplying the most advanced and highest performance-to-price ratio power solutions to the PC and server industry. Of all of the worlds PC power solutions providers, Intersil is still ranked #1, powering over half of all desktop PCs and servers, whether Intel CPU-based or AMD CPU-based. Intersil has held this position because it works closely with its customers as well as the worlds top CPU, chip set, graphics and memory manufacturers.
Many customers have adopted Intersil for one-stop shopping for all of their power needs across the motherboard and beyond. Intersil offers the highest performing power solutions that are compliant with the latest generation of platform standards for CPU core power, DDR memory, chip sets, graphics and balance-of-system power needs. Products include multiphase PWM controllers, MOSFET drivers, ACPI-compliant regulators, combination regulators, PCI and USB hot-swap controllers, voltage supervisors, and power sequencers. Intersil is also known for introducing the worlds most advanced digital multiphase power control system that offers unmatched performance, programmability, transferability and expandability.
Leveraging its expertise, reputation and leadership position in the PC/server markets, Intersil has targeted rapid growth markets for expansion with advanced power solutions for embedded computing, broadband communications, telecom and datacom, notebook and tablet PCs and handheld devices of all kinds including digital cameras, PDAs, cell phones, point-of-sale and inventory appliances. In addition, many systems based on FPGAs and ASICs now require advanced power solutions that Intersil easily adapts from CPU and memory power solutions.
In the broadband communications arena, Intersil provides power solutions for gateways, DSL modems, wireless LAN chip sets and set-top boxes for satellite and cable TV along with personal video recorders and data storage systems. Intersil finds synergy in these applications with their DSL line drivers and receivers, laser diode drivers, amplifiers, switches, multiplexers and interface ICs, both serial data and voice subscriber line interfaces. Broadband communications and computing platforms are now merging as seen, for example, in personal video recorders. Boxes with embedded CPUs and memory are served with Intersils PWM and DDR memory power solutions.
Telecom and datcom markets have isolated and point-of-load (POL) power needs that are being met with Intersils new isolated power PWM controller ICs and DC/DC POL ICs. This is yet another example of how Intersil is leveraging years of experience and knowledge to meet growing market needs with high-performance analog solutions.
Portable markets including notebook PCs and handheld devices are being served with Intersils power management and battery management ICs. Intersil is a leader in providing notebook PC manufacturers with CPU, memory and system power solutions for both Intel CPU-based and AMD CPU-based platforms. A strong growth area for Intersil is battery management, which includes battery charging and fuel gauging. Intersil now offers one of the most advanced Li-ion charging solutions, which will soon be joined by the industrys most accurate fuel gauge IC.
