IRVINE, CA, September 13, 2000 Intersil (NASDAQ: ISIL), a leading systems-oriented provider of circuits and semiconductors for the integrated communications market, announced today that it has shipped its 100-millionth Endura motherboard power control integrated circuit (IC) since the first production shipments began in 1997. Since that time, total industry shipments utilizing this advanced power switching architecture have numbered approximately 325,000,000 units.
The Endura HIP6000 family anchors Intersils portfolio of power control devices that have become standard components in desktop, portable and wireless information appliances. Power management devices provide voltage conversion functions and also protect components from overvoltage and overcurrent conditions. The Endura HIP6000 series alone represents nearly 30 percent of the desktop PC power management IC market.
"Intersil is committed to maintaining market leadership that supports the power management needs of next generation desktop, portable and wireless communications devices, " said Rick Furtney, vice president and general manager of Power Management Products. "Intersils power management products are the most widely implemented devices of their kind, with deployment in nearly one-third of the desktop PCs shipped worldwide. Our ongoing mission is to develop the most advanced and highest performing ICs that are optimized not only for PCs, RAIDs, desktop servers and other high availability applications, but also for next generation, high performance mobile products. "
Furtney also noted that Intersils newest Endura portable power management devices will increase battery life in the newest and smallest portable communications devices and are grounded on the same proven technology used in the companys desktop product offering. "Motherboard power requirements are demanding higher and more complex capabilities, " added Furtney. "Intersil leverages high volume, low cost manufacturing capabilities and invests heavily in R&D to support the growing demand of desktop and portable systems. "
Prior to 1997, low efficiency linear regulators performed this function. Increasingly power hungry processors have driven the conversion to switching controllers that realize more than 90 percent efficiency, resulting in less power loss and smaller power supplies.
Endura power management ICs have won more than 100 design-ins, and are used in more than half of all AMD Athlon motherboard designs.
