IRVINE, Calif., March 26, 2001 Intersil (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world-class leader in power management solutions, today announced a family of hot plug power management devices designed to deliver a total power control solution for high-end servers. The Intersil Endura product family includes hot plug power control devices that address the need for increased server uptime. Designed into over half of the global server hot swap computer power management applications, Endura continues to lead the industry delivering highly efficient power management products that meet todays computer industry demands.
Intersils Endura hot plug devices directly contribute to a host systems reliability and to a reduction in total cost of ownership. The product family complies with the Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) hot plug specifications and facilitates system maintenance, expansion or upgrade without the need to power down the server. Companies with a 24-hour e-business component experience the cost savings associated with performing system maintenance and improvements without interruption to service.
"As demand for 24x7 access to on-line information continues to grow, the cost of server downtime also continues to rise," said Rick Furtney vice president and general manager of Intersils Power Management Products. "Intersils Endura product line is responding with a next-generation, hot plug family of devices that enable unprecedented reliability. As a total power solution, the Endura hot plug devices offer system designers the ability to simplify design, reduce component costs and increase server uptime. We deliver independent, two-port control in a single IC, ensuring that failure in one PCI slot does not affect the other. This type innovation has helped Intersil earn its reputation as a leader in power management."
Technical Information
Intersil's new HIP1011E and ISL6118 hot swap ICs together provide a complete two-slot PCI hot swap solution for servers that employ the Advanced Configuration Power Interface (ACPI) power management protocol. ACPI reduces a system's average power consumption by putting various parts of the system, such as disk drives and processors, to sleep when they are not needed. Those components are then awakened when they are required. This results in higher density server installations for space and energy-conscious customers such as Internet Service Providers. The HIP1011D is available for customers that prefer its built-in undervoltage lockout feature.
Intersil's new ISL6121 is the newest addition to Intersil's storage system hot-swap product line. The ISL6121 is designed to hot swap the five volt rail of fibre channel, Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE), and Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) disk drives in high-availability data storage systems. The ISL6121 is an intelligent circuit breaker with current limiting and an integrated MOSFET. The overcurrent limit is set at two amps to permit large disk drive spin-up currents while protecting the rest of the system against short circuits in an individual drive. The ISL6121 is completely self-contained in an eight-lead SOIC package. There is no footprint penalty when using the ISL6121 to replace MOSFETs; therefore, current limiting, overcurrent timeout, fault indication, and logic-level enabling and disabling functions are gained.
