IRVINE, Calif., June 1, 2000 Intersil (NASDAQ: ISIL), a leading developer of silicon technology for integrated communications applications, announced today that its HC55185 ringing subscriber line interface (RSLIC) has been selected by Integral Access, Inc. for use in its PurePacket telephony platform. The device will provide the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) interface for the Integral Access solution.
VoIP and Voice over Digital Subscriber Line (VoDSL) are increasingly being employed to reduce telephony service costs by using a single line to connect both voice and data traffic to a carriers core network while preserving toll-quality voice. Local and long distance calling, which can use as little as 50 percent of the bandwidth on typical voice lines, can cost a business thousands of dollars each month.
The HC55185 is a high quality, cost-effective RSLIC which transitions the connection from traditional analog lines to digital networks by providing the ringing signal to the terminal equipment without external ringing generators or relays. The voice interface solution uses low power and provides the longest ringing loop range with minimal board space in VoIP, VoDSL and cable modem applications. Intersils device combines guaranteed 100V operation with low 80mW standby power and low active power consumption in a non-proprietary single integrated circuit (IC) solution.
"The Intersil HC55185 VoIP-RSLIC is specifically designed to support this developing communications technology as this market segment is expected to grow to almost $2 billion by 2004," said Christopher Ludeman, product marketing manager at Intersil. "Were pleased that Integral Access chose the Intersil VoIP-RSLIC solution. VoIP products are seeing an infusion of intense innovation, both in the US and internationally, and Intersil is committed to providing world-class solutions in support of this exciting market."
PurePacket from Integral Access is a multi-service packet-based access system that enables competitive carriers to offer differentiated services and combine voice and data on new generation IP-based networks, as well as traditional circuit switched infrastructures. This complete access solution includes customer premise equipment, central office aggregation devices, and an operations management system for network control and services management. To guarantee Quality of Service (QoS), enable Class of Service (CoS), and maximize the traffic carrying capacity of access networks, PurePacket uses a Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) architecture to route, transport and switch voice and data transmissions in packet format. MPLS works with the Internet Protocol (IP), Asynchronous Transport Mode (ATM), and frame relay network protocols.
"Intersil technology is a key building block for the PurePacket platform," said Guy Chenard, vice president of business development at Integral Access. "The Intersil voice interface solution helps the PurePacket system deliver IP-based voice services that match the quality of calls placed over traditional circuit switched infrastructures."
In comparison to a traditional time-division multiplexing (TDM) system which can only deliver 24 simultaneous voice channels on a T1 leased line, PurePacket can deliver 24 voice calls and 512 Kbit/s of committed data on the same T1 leased line to save significantly on leased line costs.
There are six product offerings of the HC55185 that provide product performance combinations to suit both domestic and international product requirements. The HC55185 is designed to combine high voltage ringing capability with toll-quality voice performance. A member of the Intersil RSLIC18 family of products, the HC55185 is also used in cable modems, broadband wireless access platforms, residential home gateways and ISDN Terminal Adapters.
