Intersil Releases Advanced Triple-output DC:DC Controllers for DSL Customer Premises Equipment and General-purpose Applications
-- Two versions offer wide input voltage range, high integration, high power efficiency, broad application coverage, low cost and DSL compatibility
MILPITAS, CA, June 14, 2004 Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog solutions, today announced two new advanced triple-output power controllers, the ISL6402 and the ISL6402A. These new ICs contain two synchronous-buck PWM controllers and a linear regulator in a small near-chip-scale thermally enhanced 28-pad quad flat no-lead (QFN) package and the 28-lead TSSOP package. The ISL6402 is efficiency optimized for a wide range of applications while the ISL6402A is designed for xDSL customer premises equipment (CPE) compatibility.
The ISL6402 and ISL6402A are optimized for converting wall adapter, battery or network DC input into the required system supply voltages. Operating over a wide 4.5 to 24 V supply range, each output is adjustable down to 0.8 V. An internal low dropout linear regulator eliminates the need for an additional 5-V bias. These triple power controllers provide high integration and compatibility to power systems in xDSL modems, cable modems, routers, gateways, set-top boxes and powering DSPs, ASICs and FPGAs.
The two PWM converters operate 180 degrees out of phase to substantially reduce input ripple voltage, EMI, and total RMS input current. Both PWMs have independent Enable/Soft Start pins to facilitate power sequencing in the applications. The linear controller uses an external pass transistor to accommodate high output current without dissipating heat inside the IC. This also has the advantage that the external pass transistor, PNP or PFET, can be placed closer to the powered element in the application.
The high 1.4-MHz switching frequency of the ISL6402A PWM controller places switching noise above the typical 1.1-MHz ADSL band and provides a fast transient response, making it ideal for DSL CPE applications while enabling the use of smaller external components. The ISL6402 PWM controller switches at 300-kHz frequency, which makes it optimal for applications that require multiple low-noise rails and high power efficiency.
Both of these triple regulator ICs incorporate many robust protection features. An adjustable over-current protection circuit monitors the output current by sensing the voltage drop across the lower MOSFET. Hiccup-mode over-current operation protects the DC-DC components from damage during output over-load/short circuit conditions. An over-current condition will initiate a soft-start cycle. A single PGOOD (power good) signal is issued when soft start is completed on the PWM controllers and the linear regulator. Independent logic-level shutdown inputs are included, which reduce supply current to less than 50 uA (typ.) in the shutdown mode. Thermal shutdown circuitry turns off the devices, if the junction temperature exceeds +150 degrees C.
