Intersil Provides Complete Voice Access Solution for iCable System's Gateways
-- Intersil's complete solution reduces costs and time to market
IRVINE, CA, April 11, 2002 Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a leading provider of power management solutions for PCs, file servers, portable information appliances and residential gateways, today announced that iCable System Co., Ltd., a leading provider of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) cable modems and Multimedia Terminal Adaptors (MTAs), has selected Intersils voice interface solution for their new VoIP-enabled MTA and cable modem. The solution includes the ISL6401 line and ring power IC along with two ISL5586 ringing Subscriber Line Interface Circuits (SLICs) for the iCable Systems new ICS-MTA121N MTA and ICS-112C cable modem.
iCable System is a growing VoIPaccess market leader in Korea with an innovative line of cable modems and MTAs that are sold into worldwide markets, said Andy Khayat, business development manager for Intersils Gateway Power Management Products. Weve worked closely with iCable System to provide them the most cost-effective and complete voice interface solution that contributes to their competitive position in the rapidly expanding residential gateway arena.
We selected Intersil for voice interface in our new gateway products because of their market experience and ability to provide complete solutions, said Dr. Youngok Rhee, iCable Systems Chief of R&D. Intersil saved us time and design costs with a complete voice access solution. The voice access solution includes a reference design for the ISL5586 ringing SLIC and the ISL6401 power IC to supply the line and ring voltages. This combination offered us the perfect solution.
For many years, Intersil's VoIP product line has been working with cable modem chip set companies to provide complete reference designs that shorten the product-to-market cycle time, said Chris Ludeman, Intersils worldwide marketing manager for VoIP products. We are pleased to be associated with iCable's latest innovative product releases.
iCable System Co., Ltd. Cable Modems and MTAs
The ICS-112C cable modem includes a CATV RF tuner with CMOS silicon, a processor with MIPS-32 CPU and DSP, RJ-45 Ethernet interface (10/100Base-T), USB-1.1 type B interface and two RJ-11 voice ports that support both voice and fax. Asymmetrical data transfer offers maximum rates of 42.88 Mbps downstream and 10.24 Mbps upstream. The two voice ports for the ICS-112C are accomplished using two Intersil ISL5586 Ringing Subscriber Line Interface Circuits (RSLICs) and a single ISL6401 power controller. The Intersil Endura ISL6401CB power IC supplies line and ringer voltages, necessary to power the two analog phone ports.
The ICS-MTA121N is stand-alone MTA that adds VoIP capability to any existing cable modem, ADSL modem, wireless local loop, router or hub. An Ethernet connection provides interface between the network modem or device and the MTA. Interfaces to the MTA include RJ-45 Ethernet (10/100Base-T) in and out, two RJ-11 VoIP voice ports that support both voice and fax and a third RJ-11 jack that provides backup utilizing the conventional Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). The ICS-MTA121N also has an optional USB port. Both voice ports are implemented using Intersils ISL5586s with line and ring voltages supplied by the ISL6401.
Intersil Power and Voice Access ICs for iCable Systems Products
The ISL6401 is an adjustable-frequency, low-power PWM current mode controller designed for a wide range of DC-DC conversion applications including boost, flyback and isolated-output configurations. It is optimized to provide a high-performance, low-cost solution for ringing SLIC ring and talk voltage supplies. Peak current mode control effectively handles ring trip transients and provides inherent over-current protection. Package choices for the ISL6401 include a 14-lead SOIC and a 16-pad micro lead frame plastic package measuring a small 4 X 4 mm.
The ISL5586 is a very low-power ringing SLIC designed for home gateway applications. This SLIC provides on-board ringing signal generation up to 95 V peak supporting both sinusoidal and trapezoidal waveforms with DC offset. Both loop-start and ground-start trunks are supported along with on-hook transmission and pulse metering. It is compatible with 3.3-V devices and is offered in the 28-lead PLCC package. The ISL6401 is companion to the ISL5586, providing the talk and ring voltages. Together, a voice/fax port is created that replicates the PSTN allowing any standard analog telephone/fax device to function over Internet protocol.
Intersil offers a wide range of products and solutions that target the residential gateway markets. Products and solutions include PWM controllers, linear regulators, combo ICs that include both PWM and linear regulators, USB hot plug interface ICs, front-end DSP, data converters, RS-232 interface ICs, total 802.11 wireless LAN solutions and complete VoIP interface solutions.
