Intersil Offers the Worlds First Radiation-Hardened Half-Bridge Driver for Space Applications
— Intersil’s radiation-hardened products enable space exploration and communications
IRVINE, CA, October 8, 2001 Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a leading provider of power management solutions for terrestrial and space applications, today announced the IS-2100ARH radiation-hardened high-frequency half-bridge MOSFET driver for space power applications. This latest edition to Intersils portfolio of Star*Powerä hardened power management ICs is the worlds only component capable of surviving the single event effects (SEE) and high levels of total ionizing dose (TID) encountered in the space environment.
The IS-2100ARH is a high-reliability radiation-hardened high-frequency 150V half-bridge MOSFET driver designed for power and motor control in space applications. It is a pin-for-pin replacement for industry standard 2110 types, which have inferior radiation and single-event upset (SEU) ratings. Low-side and high-side drivers are independently controlled allowing maximum dead-time control to avoid shoot-through.
The most significant feature of the IS-2100ARH is on-chip error detection and correction. This circuitry monitors the state of the high-side latch and compares it to the high-side input level. If they disagree, a set or reset pulse is immediately generated to correct the high-side latch. This important feature prevents heavy ion induced single-event upsets (SEU) that may cause high-current shoot-through and possible component destruction leading to system inoperability.
The IS-2100ARH replaces current discrete-component solutions for space power-driver applications, saving board space and costs while increasing reliability, said Tom Marshall, marketing manager for Intersils Space Products. It also eliminates the need to hand-select and up-screen non-radiation hardened devices for space applications.
Other important features of the IS-2100ARH include: under-voltage protection, latch-up immunity, total radiation dose rating to 300krad, SEU rating of 82MeV/mg/cm2, bootstrap supply voltage to 170V, drives 1,000pF loads at 1MHz with rise and fall times of only 30ns, low 60mW power consumption and a VDD supply range of 12V to 20V.
To ensure survival in the space environments extremely harsh temperature variations and radiation, components such as the IS-2100ARH are designed in strict accordance with standards controlled by the Defense Supply Center of Columbus (DSCC). Detailed electrical specifications for the IS-2100ARH are contained in DSCC document SMD 5962-99536 and the component is qualified per MIL-PRF-38535 requirements.
