Intersil Named EDN 2002 Innovation of the Year Awards Finalist
-- New Digital Multiphase Power Control for future-generation CPUs offers reuse and required precision
MILPITAS, CA, February 28, 2003 Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog and wireless networking solutions, today announced that it has been selected from a field of hundreds of candidates as a finalist in the EDN 2002 Innovation of the Year Awards competition. This exclusive awards program, sponsored by EDN Magazine, is dedicated to honoring truly outstanding engineering products in the electronics industry.
Products/technologies qualifying for a 2002 EDN Innovation award must have been introduced and commercially marketed from January 1, 2002 through December 31, 2002. Seventeen product/technology areas were eligible for consideration in addition to the Innovator of the Year award. A panel of EDNs technical editors selected finalist products in each category. Intersil Corporation had its Digital Multiphase Power Control technology selected in the Power Sources category. A complete list of finalists in all categories will appear in the March 6, 2003 issue of EDN and on the EDN Access Web site at: http://www.edn.com
This is exciting and a great honor to have been selected as a finalist in EDNs 2002 Innovation of the Year Awards competition, said Rick Furtney, vice president and general manager of Intersils High Performance Analog Products Group. Our new Digital Multiphase Power Control technology is a powerful enabler for designers faced with the challenge of extreme control and precision for future high-current and sub-volt multi-GHz CPUs. It is our stake in the ground to ensure our continued leadership in advanced power control architecture.
Intersils Digital Multiphase Power Control Architecture
Targeted for next and future generations of multi-GHz CPUs used in high-end servers, Intersils Digital Multiphase Power (DMP) solution is a fully programmable architecture easily accessed via a simple user software interface. The designer is able to actually change the personality of the digital controller IC to meet the requirements of multiple generations of CPUs and applications. This allows the entire solution to be readily transferable and upgradeable through software optimization of parameters such as loop response, number of phases, frequency per phase, input voltage, maximum load and passive filter component characteristics. This system optimization capability is based on the Primarions PowerCode software. Intersil has made an extensive investment in Primarion and is the exclusive licensee of their Digital Multiphase Power (DMP) Control Architecture.
Summary of Intersils DMP Benefits
- Software programmable to optimize performance and reduce development time
- Fast transient and state-change event response
- Active transient response (ATR) mode enables use of fewer filter capacitors
- Digital control loop remains precise over time and temperature
- Higher degree of voltage control precise load line adherence
- User-friendly software interface
- Reusable and transferable from one platform to another
- Scaleable to meet advanced processor or multiprocessor needs
- System diagnostics capability
- Better noise immunity with digital control loop
