Intersil Leads Industry with World's Smallest Complete RS-232 Serial Transceivers

-- New micro lead frame packaged RS-232 transceivers leapfrog competition with smallest size, lowest power, highest performance and 15-kV ESD protection

IRVINE, CA, June 24, 2002 – Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog and wireless networking solutions, today announced the world’s smallest complete RS-232 serial port transceivers. The 3Tx/5Rx transceivers are specifically designed to provide compact, low-power, high-speed, serial data ports for the next wave of PDAs, handheld appliances, notebook PCs and other battery-powered devices where space and power consumption are major issues.

Each of these new transceivers is encapsulated in the miniscule 32-pad 5 X 5 mm Micro Lead Frame Plastic (MLFP) package. The new MLFP package provides many needed benefits where space and power dissipation are important. At a mere 5 X 5 X 0.9 mm, the MLFP package is less than half the size of the SSOP packages it replaces. Small lands on the underside perimeter provide circuit contact so there are no leads to become bent during handling or assembly. Special manufacturing equipment is not needed. The new ISL4241EIR, ISL4243EIR, ISL4244EIR and ISL4245EIR ICs join Intersil’s family of serial transceivers.
