Intersil Launches Synchronizable Low-Voltage Power Controllers for Distributed DC/DC Architectures in Broadband Gateway Applications

-- Offer adjustable frequency range and external sync-up capability for distributed DC below 3.3 V~-- Selection of small packages saves board area while high feature integration saves costs


MILPITAS, CA, December 5, 2002 – Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog and wireless networking solutions, today announced the new ISL6406 and ISL6426 synchronous buck power controllers that feature an adjustable 100- to 700-kHz switching frequency range and are capable of being synchronized with an external clock or other distributed DC converters in a system. The ISL6406’s output voltage is settable from 0.8 to 3.3 V and the ISL6426 output voltage is fixed at a 1.8 V. Small packaging and a high integration of features saves space and reduces cost.

The ISL6406 and ISL6426 are highly efficient adjustable-frequency synchronous-buck switching regulators that operated from a single 3.3-V or 5-V supply rail. Both regulators are optimized for generating lower voltages for a variety of distributed DC-DC applications, including those in which regulator operating frequency synchronization is required. Typical power supply efficiencies greater than 92% can be achieved helping to eliminate the need for a heatsink in standard-buck or linear-regulating converters. This combination of features and the available miniature packaging, such as the 4 X 4 mm Quad Flat No lead (QFN) package, enables the design of a high performance power supply in an extremely small board area. The ISL6406 and ISL6426 are ideal for DC-DC modules, network access devices and other applications requiring high efficiency.
