Intersil Launches Quad Regulator IC to Support a Broad Range of Medical, Industrial, Computing and Telecom Applications
-- High integration with full features enables space and cost savings~-- Features include four supplies in one, protection, power-on reset and soft-start
MILPITAS, CA, April 27, 2004 Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog solutions, today announced the new Endura ISL6521 quad regulator IC. This advanced solution includes one switching regulator, for up to a 20-A load, and three linear regulators that each drive 120 mA, or 3 A with external transistors. High integration brings these four regulators together with full protection, power-on reset and soft-start features in one space- and cost-saving IC. Applications for this new IC range broadly, providing power solutions for FPGAs, ASICs, POL, embedded systems and input/output across medical, industrial, computing and telecom.
Our customers are requiring higher and higher integration of their power solutions to meet vital space and cost points while retaining high performance, said Cindy Drapcho, Vice President of Intersils Power Products. The ISL6521 delivers what customers require at the lowest overall solution cost in the industry. The high integration simplifies the power solutions and, with Intersil support, reduces design time and time-to-market.
The ISL6521 monitors and precisely controls one synchronous-buck converter and three configurable linear regulators from a +5V bias input. The synchronous-buck PWM regulator provides the most power to a primary load. Often, this primary load is the core voltage of an FPGA, ASIC or embedded processor. The linear regulators are designed to regulate three additional system voltages. Typically, these include any I/O, memory, or clock voltages that might be required.
All four regulator outputs are adjustable between 0.8 V and 4.0 V providing +/-2 percent regulation over the full temperature range. All outputs are over-current protected. The PWM controller uses the upper MOSFETs on-resistance, rDS(ON) to monitor the current. The linear controllers monitor their respective feedback (FB) pins for under-voltage events to protect against excessive currents.
