Intersil Launches Pair of PWM Controllers with Integrated MOSFETs to Deliver High Efficiency and Cost Savings to a Broad Range of Applications
-- New ICs power 500-mA low-voltage applications with industry's lowest parts count
MILPITAS, CA, April 28, 2004 Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog solutions, today announced the release of two new fully integrated low-voltage synchronous-buck DC-to-DC converter ICs, the ISL6410 and ISL6410A. These new ICs bring space and cost savings to a broad range of medical, industrial, computing and telecom applications.
The ISL6410 and ISL6410A fill the need for a compact and fully integrated power solution for low-voltage applications that require up to 500 mA of continuous output current, said Randy Roberts, Director of Intersils Broadband Power Products. Our field and applications engineers have seen many customer power scenarios in which the parts count and complexity are just too high. Seeing the need for a highly integrated and cost-saving solution, Intersil designers went to work and created the ISL6410 and ISL6410A to deliver the industrys lowest-parts-count power solution.
The ISL6410 operates from 3.3 V while the ISL6410A operates from 5 V. Both ICs include PWM control, MOSFET drivers, a complementary pair of power MOSFETs and a full array of protection features for powering FPGAs, ASICs, DSPs, microcontrollers, small microprocessors and WLAN chip sets. These synchronous-buck current-mode PWM regulators have integrated N- and P-Channel power MOSFETs. Synchronous rectification with integrated MOSFETs achieves high efficiency while reducing external component count. Output voltages are pin selected instead of requiring additional external components. This further reduces parts count and cost.
The high 750-kHz (typical) operating frequency enables the use of a small inductor and capacitors. The PWM control can be synchronized to an external clock signal in the range of 500 kHz to 1 MHz. A power good (PGOOD) pin is used to signal when the output voltage falls outside the regulation limits. Additional features include over-current protection and thermal overload shutdown.
