Intersil Launches New Portfolio of Full Featured RS-485/RS-422 Transceivers

Milpitas, CA, November 8, 2004 – Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog solutions, today announced a new family of BiCMOS 5 V powered, single transceivers that meet both the RS-485 and RS-422 standards for balanced (differential) communication that are typically deployed for long distance transmission and/or in noisy environments. The ISL83080E thru ISL83088E family of transceivers boast several feature enhancements over the current portfolio including a full fail-safe design, hot swap capability, a fractional unit load to the RS-485 bus, three data rate options and greater than 15 kV Human Body Model (HBM) ESD protection.

The transceivers’ receiver (Rx) inputs feature a true fail-safe design, which ensures a logic high Rx output if Rx inputs are floating, shorted or terminated but un-driven. This prevents Rx chattering for predictable performance during bus faults. Hot Plug circuitry is included on the slew rate limited devices to ensure that the transmitter (Tx) and Rx outputs remain tri-stated during power up/power down. This ensures data isn’t disrupted when a node is plugged onto an active bus. Three data rate options provide two slew rate-limited options for low data rates (115 kbps and 500 kbps) and a high-speed option for up to 10 Mbps data rates.

These devices are one-eighth fractional-unit load transceivers that enable up to 256 nodes on the RS-485 bus as compared to only 32 nodes for single-unit load devices. The large number of nodes on a single bus saves cost and complexity, by eliminating the need for repeaters, in large networks, such as, e-power meters, factory automation, process control, environmental control or security systems.

Power-up circuitry ensures that the Tx and Rx outputs remain in a high impedance state until the power supply has stabilized. Tx outputs are short circuit protected, even for voltages exceeding the power supply voltage. Additionally, on-chip thermal shutdown circuitry disables the Tx outputs to prevent damage if power dissipation becomes excessive, and the Tx outputs automatically re-enable once the IC cools down.

These ICs are ESD protected to 15 kV on all Tx and Rx bus pins and up to 7 kV on all logic pins, which greatly improves survivability from random static charges during manufacturing and use. Unlike some competitive devices, Intersil’s new RS-485 and RS-422 transceivers are specified for 10 percent tolerance supplies (4.5 V to 5.5 V).
