Intersil Introduces World's Smallest Footprint 3.3V RS-485/422 Devices With Full Fail-Safe, Fractional Load, and 15kV ESD Protection
— Seven new ISL8307xE devices are the latest additions to Intersil’s expanding family of transceivers and feature full fail-safe and hot swap features along with fractional load (up to 256 nodes) and 15kV HBM ESD protection in very small MSOP packages.
MILPITAS, CA, June 08, 2005 Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog solutions, today announced seven new data transceivers that are BiCMOS 3.3V powered, single transceivers that meet both the RS-485 and RS-422 standards for differential data communications. Such devices utilize balanced data-transmission schemes and are robust solutions for transmitting data over long distances and in noisy environments. These devices are ideal for applications in factory automation, security networks, building environmental control systems, industrial process control systems and automated utility meter-reading systems.
The ISL8307xE family features enhancements over the current portfolio of Intersil transceivers, covering the range of features associated with the RS-485 protocol. In addition to full fail-safe receivers and hot swap circuitry, the devices provide fractional unit loads that allow up to 256 nodes on the bus along with full or half duplex operation and three data rate options. These transceivers also provide ESD protection of greater than 15kV human body model (HBM) on the bus input/output (I/O) pins and 7kV HBM ESD on all other pins. The ESD protection provides a high degree of reliability in both manufacturing and end-customer applications and eliminates the need for external protection circuitry. Also the devices are packaged in tiny MSOP packages, which are 50 percent smaller that standard SOIC packages.
Our new 3.3 volt family complements the 5V family (ISL8308xE) of transceivers we introduced last fall and brings our total transceiver portfolio to well over 100 devices, said Randy Pitts, product marketing manager for Interface products in Intersils Analog Signal Processing Products Group. These industry-leading full feature 3.3 volt parts join our expanding family of 5 volt, full duplex, half duplex, slew-rate limited, high speed and fractional load interface products to serve just about any data transmission application.
The ISL8307xE receiver (Rx) inputs feature a full fail-safe design, which ensures a logic high Rx output if Rx inputs are floating, shorted or terminated but un-driven. This prevents Rx output chattering for predictable performance during bus faults. Hot swap circuitry is included on all the devices to ensure that the transmitter (Tx) and Rx outputs remain tri-stated during power up. This ensures data isnt disrupted when a node is plugged into an active bus. Three data rate options provide two slew rate-limited options for low data rates (250 kbps and 500 kbps) and a high-speed option for up to 20 Mbps data rates.
These devices are one-eighth (fractional) unit load transceivers that enable up to 256 nodes on the RS-485 bus as compared to only 32 nodes for single-unit load devices. The large number of nodes on a single bus saves cost and complexity by eliminating the need for repeaters in large networks (i.e. e-power meters, factory automation, process/environmental control or security systems).
Power-up circuitry ensures that the Tx and Rx outputs remain in a high impedance state until the power supply has stabilized. Tx outputs are short circuit protected, even for voltages exceeding the power supply voltage. Additionally, on-chip thermal shutdown circuitry disables the Tx outputs to prevent damage if power dissipation becomes excessive, and the Tx outputs automatically re-enable once the IC cools down.
These ICs are ESD protected to 15kV (HBM) on all Tx and Rx bus pins and up to 7kV on all logic pins, which greatly improves survivability from random static charges during manufacturing and use. Unlike some competitive devices, Intersils new RS-485 and RS-422 transceivers are specified for 10 percent tolerance supplies (3.0V to 3.6V).
