Intersil Introduces Single Chip, Four-Channel DC:DC Converter for Flat Panel Displays
-- New EL7584 is ideal for 14- to 18-inch TFT/LCD displays; incorporates many regulator functions into single small IC
MILPITAS, CA, October 1, 2003 Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog solutions, today added a new four-channel DC:DC converter to its growing Elantec® family of integrated circuits for LCD flat panel and PDA displays. The EL7584 incorporates multiple regulator functions into a single chip, providing cost and space savings in a broad range of flat panel display designs, including TFT/LCD monitors, LCD notebook displays, pocket PCs and PDAs.
"As a leading supplier of ICs to the flat panel display market, Intersil continues to add innovative new products to its video and flat panel portfolio, said Michael Jennings, director of marketing for Intersils Display Products. The EL7584 is the latest addition to the Elantec family of multi-output DC:DC converters for flat panel displays, with the features, performance and efficiency that our customers demand. This four-in-one regulator is particularly well suited for 14- to 18-inch TFT/LCD displays, and offers adjustable switching frequencies, on-chip power sequencing and over-temperature protection. As with all of our products, Intersil provides customers superior applications support, demo boards, sample devices and technical assistance to ensure outstanding performance with minimal design effort."
The EL7584 features a 2-volt to 14-volt input capability and provides 5 volts to 18 volts of output from a boost converter for powering column drivers in TFT/LCD applications. It can provide up to 470 milliamps at 12 volts. A regulator is then used to generate a common voltage (VCOM) from 2 volts to 13 volts at up to 50 milliamps of continuous output current and is rated at 180 milliamps peak current.
A pair of charge pump control circuits provides regulated outputs allowing the external generation of VON and VOFF supplies of +5 volts to +40 volts and 40 volts to 5 volts, respectively. A separate input is available to externally increase the default delay of the positive charge pump. An over-temperature feature automatically protects the device from excessive power dissipation. The EL7584 operates over an ambient temperature range of -40 to +85 degrees C. The combination of three regulated output voltages, 90% typical efficiency, wide operating voltage range and small TSSOP package makes the EL7584 an excellent power solution for designers of TFT/LCD displays.
