Intersil Introduces Radiation Hardened Pulse Width Modulator
Tested and guaranteed performance of the 1825A function to 300K rads
PALM BAY, FL, December 6, 1999 Intersil Corporation announced today its radiation hardened (Rad Hard), high speed, dual output pulse width modulator (PWM). The device controls power MOSFET drivers or directly drives Rad Hard power MOSFETS in power supplies, DC to DC converters and motor control applications. An addition to Intersil’s Star*Power family of Rad Hard power semiconductors, the device is designed for space power systems applications in harsh radiation environments.
Intersil’s HS-1825ARH is a Rad Hard version of the industry standard 1825A dual output PWM. The device is designed to be used in high frequency switched-mode power supplies and can be used in either current-mode or voltage-mode. It is designed for single-ended boost converter applications.

Intersils HS-1825ARH is a Rad Hard version of the industry standard 1825A dual output PWM. The device is designed to be used in high frequency switched-mode power supplies and can be used in either current-mode or voltage-mode. It is designed for single-ended boost converter applications.
The device monitors the output voltage of the supply and adjusts the switching pulse widths to maintain the desired voltage levels. Latch up immune, the HS-1825ARH also provides greatly reduced sensitivity to low dose rate effects. Tested and guaranteed to perform standard 1825A functions to 300K rad levels, the device does not require additional upscreening or rad testing by the designer.
All of the HS-1825ARH parameters are tested and guaranteed to 300K rad over the full military temperature range allowing customers to know exactly how the device will perform in extreme conditions. The device operates from a single supply from 12 volts (V) to 20V and requires only minimal (100 microamperes typical) current. Peak output current is at one amp typical. This device also features an under voltage (<10 volts) lockout capability. A programmable soft-start feature ensures that the power is fully regulated before the output pulses are maximized. This feature allows for small duty cycles at power up and prevents initial voltage overshoot.
About Star*Power
The Star*Power product family includes Intersils next generation Rad Hard MOSFETs, Rad Hard power management ICs and a developing Rad Hard DC to DC converter portfolio. Products currently include MOSFET drivers, bridge drivers, comparators, regulators and references, and the family will soon include Intersils GEN III Rad Hard MOSFET devices. To round out the Star*Power family, Intersil will offer a family of high efficiency DC to DC converters which are compliant to MIL-STD 461D, meet 100k RAD total dose, and mitigate single event effects. Intersils Star*Power products allow satellite manufacturers to minimize part count, utilize the advantages of distributed power design techniques and ensure the survivability of satellites in harsh radiation environments. Star*Power components exhibit rugged total dose radiation performance and single event effects immunity and are best employed when failure is not an option in spacecraft power systems. Star*Power information can be obtained by logging onto Intersils Web site at www.intersil.com, or requesting brochures BR118 and BR126.1 from your nearest Intersil sales location.
Intersils radiation hardened IC and discrete devices are commercially available standard product items and are outstanding Commercial Off the Shelf (COTs) solutions for Satellite systems applications.
