IRVINE, CA, June 21, 2000 — Intersil (NASDAQ:ISIL), a leading developer of silicon technology for military and space integrated communications applications, today announced the industry’s first radiation hardened (RadHard) analog switch specifically designed for signal processing and signal routing applications in communications satellites, satellite subsystems and payload electronics.

Intersil’s HS-201HSRH allows an analog signal to be passed or blocked as required by the communication application. Designed to resist the negative effects of the harsh radiation environment of space, the switch can be deployed in the high speed multiplexing of analog signals in data acquisition and imaging circuitry on board communication and surveillance satellites. Internal overvoltage circuitry eliminates the need for external protection components or the upscreening of commercial devices currently required for similar communications functions in intense radiation environments. The device features power-off high impedance switching cells that enable multiple devices connected to the same databus to be powered-down without causing signal degradation. This "cold sparing" technique is often used to conserve precious satellite power in redundant applications.

"Intersil identified a demand for RadHard switching in communications satellites and responded to the need," said Debbie Timmerman, product marketing manager at Intersil. "The device is radiation tested and delivers high speed switching for both military and commercial users. Eliminating the need for additional upscreening, rad testing and external components for over voltage protection, the device greatly reduces both costs and cycle times."

Intersil’s HS-201HSRH is a high speed (TON = 110ns max.), quad single-pole single-throw (SPST), bipolar/complementary metal oxide silicon (BiCMOS) analog switch. All parameters are tested and guaranteed to 300krad over the full military temperature range. Dielectrically isolated device islands ensure latch up immunity, and vertical device process technology greatly reduces sensitivity to low dose rate effects. The device also features +/-30V overvoltage protection, low on resistance (50ohms max.) and +/-17V power-off high impedance.
